Third-party tested supplement database

By Erin Rose · Registries as of Tuesday, August 25, 2026 · Index rebuilt · Methodology

Not medical advice. This database checks products against public certification registries and the brands’ own published lab reports; we do not test products ourselves. Matching is by name and is deliberately generous, so it overstates certification rather than understating it.

Quick answer

55 of the 778 supplements we track (7.1%) are individually listed by NSF, USP Verified or Informed Sport. Another 163 come from a brand with some certified product but no listing for that one, and 560 come from brands absent from all three registries. The cheapest certified product per day of its studied dose is Nature Made Melatonin 3 mg at $0.05.

What each mark actually checks

  • NSF/ANSI 173 (and NSF Certified for Sport): facility audit, label-claim testing of production lots, contaminant screening; the Sport mark adds a screen for banned substances on every lot. Listed products are searchable by name on info.nsf.org.
  • USP Verified: the product contains the labelled ingredients at the labelled amounts, without harmful contaminant levels, dissolves as specified, and is made to FDA cGMP; the USP mark is on the bottle and the product on quality-supplements.org. Only 16 brands hold it.
  • Informed Sport / Informed Choice: every batch (Sport) or periodic batches (Choice) tested for banned substances by LGC; strong on doping risk, silent on whether the dose matches the label.
  • IFOS (fish oil only): lot-level EPA/DHA content, oxidation and contaminant testing by SGS Nutrasource with a public report per lot.
  • “Third-party tested” on a label with no program named: unverifiable. Ask the brand for a certificate of analysis with a lot number and a named lab; 12 of the 98 products we checked in depth actually publish one.

Frequently asked questions

What does "third-party tested" actually mean on a supplement label?

Four different things, and only two can be checked. (1) Certified: the product is listed by an independent program — NSF/ANSI 173 or NSF Certified for Sport, USP Verified, Informed Sport/Choice — which audits the facility and tests production lots. (2) Lot report: the brand publishes a certificate of analysis for the lot you can buy, from a named lab. (3) A report with no lot number, or a lab the brand will not name. (4) The phrase "third-party tested" on the label with nothing behind it. Of the 778 products here, 55 are (1); 12 of the 98 we checked in depth publish a lot-specific report.

How many supplements are third-party certified?

In our catalogue, 55 of 778 (7.1%) are individually listed by NSF, USP or Informed Sport. The three registries together hold 5,317 listings as of Tuesday, August 25, 2026; most of the market is not in any of them.

Which supplement brands are third-party tested?

Brands with the most individually certified products in our catalogue: Thorne (16 of 31), Nature Made (14 of 18), BulkSupplements (6 of 36), Momentous (3 of 4), Double Wood (2 of 17), Transparent Labs (2 of 3), Konsyl (2 of 2), Nature's Bounty (1 of 20). A brand being in a registry does not mean every product is: 163 products here come from a brand with some certified product but no listing for that product.

Is a Health Canada NPN or an FDA-registered facility the same as third-party testing?

No. An NPN is a Canadian sale licence and "FDA-registered facility" means the factory is registered, not inspected per lot. cGMP audits the process, not the bottle. Only a product-level registry listing or a lot-specific certificate of analysis tells you a lab looked at what you are buying.

What is the cheapest third-party certified supplement?

Per day of the studied dose, the cheapest certified product we track is Nature Made Melatonin 3 mg at $0.05 per day (USP Verified, Melatonin).

How do I check a product myself?

Search the product name on info.nsf.org (Certified Dietary Supplements), quality-supplements.org (USP Verified) and sport.wetestyoutrust.com (Informed Sport). Match the exact product and flavour, not just the brand. Then look for a certificate of analysis on the brand site with a lot number that matches your bottle and a named, accredited lab.

Products that publish a lot-specific report

The strongest evidence short of a registry listing: a certificate of analysis for a numbered lot from a named laboratory. 12 products we checked publish one.
