By Erin Rose · Updated · Methodology

The short answer

17 of the 25 popular protein powders we checked are listed in at least one of four independent registries, and we price 14 of them below. The cheapest listed one is Muscle Milk Genuine Protein Powder at $1.39 per 25 g of protein, but it is a high-carb mixed powder. The cheapest high-protein one is Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey at $1.45. 7 popular powders, including Isopure Zero Carb and Ghost Whey, are not listed for the product we link.

Registry listings work in two ways. NSF lists each product by flavor and pack size, and we count an NSF listing only when it covers the pack we link. Optimum Nutrition’s NSF listings are the 10 lb tub and Momentous’s is the 12-serving pack; we price a 5 lb tub and a 25-serving jar, so neither counts as NSF listed here. Informed Sport and Informed Choice list the product line, not flavors, and Informed Choice lists products per country; we matched the US line where the list names a country. * We could not read Garden of Life’s own label, so its 20 servings come from the NSF listing: a 660 g pack divided by a 33 g scoop.

Popular powders not listed for the product we link

These are well-known protein powders. Not being listed does not mean a product was not tested. It means we could not find the product, in the size we link, in a public registry.

Popular protein powders, as sold on Amazon, not found in NSF Certified for Sport or NSF/ANSI 173 (searched October 1, 2026), Informed Choice (list read September 22, 2026) or Informed Sport (list saved September 9, 2026)

We checked 25 powders in all; 4 are not in the tables. Three are listed but not priced. Kaged Whey Protein Isolate is in Informed Sport, but the brand page gives two different servings counts (25 and 41). Dymatize Elite Whey is in Informed Choice ("Elite 100% Whey Protein"), but the brand page prints no Nutrition Facts panel. Garden of Life Sport plant protein is in Informed Choice ("Sport Organic Plant-Based Protein"), but we could not read the brand’s own label. One claim we could not confirm: Gnarly Whey says it is NSF Certified for Sport, but the NSF listing we found shows a 46 g serving (2 scoops), while the current label shows 35 g, and it is not in Informed Choice.

What each program checks

The four registries we searched, as each program describes itself
ProgramWhat it checks, according to the programHow it lists productsWhere to search
NSF Certified for SportThe label matches the contents, the product is screened for contaminants, and it is tested for substances banned in sport.By product, flavor and packnsfsport.com
NSF/ANSI 173The label matches the contents and the product is screened for contaminants. It is NSF’s general supplement standard.By productinfo.nsf.org/Certified/Dietary
Informed SportEvery batch is tested for banned substances before it is sold.By product linesport.wetestyoutrust.com
Informed ChoiceProducts bought off the shelf are tested for banned substances every month.By product line, per countrychoice.wetestyoutrust.com

What we found when we checked the labels

  • NSF listings are per flavor and pack. NSF Certified for Sport lists Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey in Double Rich Chocolate and Vanilla Ice Cream, in the 10 lb tub only; the 5 lb tub we price is not on that list. We count Gold Standard as listed because Informed Choice lists the whole Gold Standard 100% Whey line. Momentous is the same case without the second listing: NSF lists its 12-serving pack, not the 25-serving jar we price.
  • "Tested" is not the same as "certified." Nutricost says its isolate is "tested by an independent, accredited lab" without naming the lab, and we did not find it in any of the four registries.
  • Some claims point to a different program. Naked Whey cites NSF "Contents Certified," a separate NSF program with its own list that we did not search. We did not find Naked Whey in NSF Certified for Sport or NSF/ANSI 173, but Informed Choice lists it.
  • A few brands post lab reports by lot. Transparent Labs says you can match the lot number on your tub to a lab report on its site, and Momentous posts batch reports. That is a second check on top of the registry listing.
  • Read the protein share, not just the price. Muscle Milk Genuine Protein Powder is the cheapest listed powder per 25 g of protein, but only 46% of each serving is protein; the rest is mostly carbohydrate. The cheapest high-protein listed powder is Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey.

Frequently asked questions

Which protein powders are third-party tested?

Of the 25 popular protein powders we checked, 17 are listed in at least one independent registry: 7 in NSF Certified for Sport, 9 in Informed Choice, 3 in Informed Sport and 1 in NSF’s general supplement registry (NSF/ANSI 173). 3 are in two registries. We count a listing only when it covers the pack we link. The first table prices 14 of them, and every row links to its registry listing. The other 3 are named under the tables.

What is the cheapest certified protein powder?

Muscle Milk Genuine Protein Powder at $1.39 per 25 g of protein at the Amazon price we recorded on October 1, 2026. It is a mixed powder with a lot of carbohydrate. The cheapest high-protein one is Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey at $1.45 per 25 g.

Is Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard third-party tested?

Yes. Informed Choice lists the "ON Gold Standard 100% Whey" product line, without flavors. NSF Certified for Sport lists Double Rich Chocolate and Vanilla Ice Cream in the 10 lb tub only; the 5 lb tub we price is not on that list, so we do not count it as NSF certified. The separate Gold Standard 100% Isolate is listed in Informed Choice as a product line ("ON Gold Standard Isolate").

Is Dymatize ISO100 third-party tested?

Informed Choice lists "ISO100 Hydrolyzed Protein Powder (USA)" as a product line, without flavors (list read September 22, 2026). The label says "banned substance tested." We did not find ISO100 in NSF Certified for Sport, NSF/ANSI 173 or Informed Sport.

What is the difference between NSF Certified for Sport, NSF/ANSI 173, Informed Sport and Informed Choice?

According to each program: NSF/ANSI 173 checks that the label matches what is in the tub and screens for contaminants. NSF Certified for Sport adds testing for substances banned in sport. Informed Sport tests every batch for banned substances before release. Informed Choice tests products bought off the shelf for banned substances every month. NSF lists products by flavor and pack; Informed Sport and Informed Choice list product lines.

How do I check my own tub?

Search the brand at nsfsport.com, sport.wetestyoutrust.com or choice.wetestyoutrust.com. NSF lists each product by flavor and pack size, so check the exact flavor and size you are buying. Informed Sport and Informed Choice list the product line, and Informed Choice lists products per country. Some brands also post lab reports: Transparent Labs says you can match the lot number on your tub to a report on its site.
