Only want a 2 lb tub? Then they cost about the same: $2.12 per 25 g for Gold Standard’s 2 lb tub, $2.12 for Ghost. The savings come from the 5 lb tub, and Ghost Whey does not come in one. See the math.

Price: Gold Standard’s 5 lb tub costs about 32% less per gram of protein

On Amazon (October 7, 2026), Gold Standard’s 5 lb tub is $102.81 for 74 scoops of 24 g, or 1,776 g of protein. That is $1.45 per 25 g. Ghost Whey’s 2 lb tub is $54.99 for 26 scoops of 25 g, or 650 g of protein. That is $2.12 per 25 g. Per scoop, that is $2.12 for Ghost and $1.39 for Gold Standard. At 25 g of protein a day, Ghost costs about $20 more a month.

Amazon prices checked October 7, 2026. Cost per 25 g of protein = price ÷ (scoops × grams of protein per scoop) × 25.

Ghost sells each flavor as its own 2 lb tub. On October 7, 2026, Amazon had eight Ghost Whey flavors at $52.24 to $54.99 a tub, so the gap holds across flavors. To check a price you see, divide it by the scoops, then by the grams of protein per scoop, and multiply by 25.

Per scoop: close, with a few real differences

Ghost has 25 g of protein in a 35 g scoop. Gold Standard has 24 g in a 30.4 g scoop. Both blend whey isolate with whey concentrate, and both use natural and artificial flavor. The real differences are the sweetener, the added enzymes and soy: Gold Standard’s label lists soy, and Ghost’s does not.

Per scoop, from each label (Ghost Milk Chocolate tub; Gold Standard Double Rich Chocolate 5 lb label in the NIH label database, record 289172). Gold Standard’s sodium differs by label: 50 mg on that 5 lb label, 55 mg on the 10 lb label shown below, and 130 mg on a 2025 10 lb label (NIH record 332030). These are the brands’ own figures; we did not lab-test them. Other flavors differ.

Ghost’s numbers change by flavor. Its Chocolate Chip Cookies tub lists a 39 g scoop with 150 calories, 6 g of carbs and 2 g of added sugar. Protein stays at 25 g. Read the panel on the flavor you buy.

Ghost adds three enzymes: two that break down protein (proteases and bromelain) and lactase, which breaks down lactose. Gold Standard adds lactase only. Both contain milk, so neither is safe for a milk allergy. Gold Standard’s label also lists soy; Ghost’s lists milk only and uses sunflower lecithin. We did not taste either one. Testing matters most if you get drug-tested for sport or work. For everyone else, it shows an outside lab checks the product where anyone can look it up. It does not make the protein work better.

How we checked this

We searched each program’s own list for both brands on October 7, 2026. Informed Sport’s only Gold Standard whey is “Gold Standard 100% Whey Elite Series,” sold in Europe, not the US tub. NSF Certified for Sport has no search box that returns a page, so we read its full list (2,552 products) and found Ghost only on GHOST Energy cans. We count only what the lists show.

Each cell is a search of the program’s own list.

What the labels say

Both labels list artificial flavor and an artificial sweetener: sucralose in Ghost, acesulfame potassium in Gold Standard. Gold Standard’s image is from the 10 lb tub. The 5 lb tub has the same 24 g of protein a scoop.

Questions

Is Ghost protein third party tested?

Not on any public testing list we could find. On October 7, 2026 we searched Informed Sport, Informed Choice, NSF Certified for Sport, NSF/ANSI 173 and USP Verified, and none lists Ghost Whey. Ghost does have other products on NSF lists: six GHOST Hydration sticks on NSF/ANSI 173 and six GHOST Energy cans on NSF Certified for Sport. Those listings do not cover the protein powder. Informed Choice lists the Gold Standard 100% Whey product line (it names no flavor or size).

Is Ghost protein good?

A 35 g scoop of Milk Chocolate has 25 g of protein, 130 calories and 2 g of sugar, from a whey isolate and concentrate blend. Two things count against it: it costs $2.12 per 25 g of protein on Amazon, against $1.45 for Gold Standard’s 5 lb tub, and it is on no testing list.

Is Ghost whey isolate or concentrate?

Both. The label lists whey protein isolate first, then whey protein concentrate, then hydrolyzed whey protein isolate. Gold Standard is a blend too: whey isolate, whey concentrate and whey peptides.

Is Ghost protein lactose free?

Ghost does not say it is lactose free, and it contains whey concentrate, which has some lactose. The label adds lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose, plus two enzymes that break down protein. Gold Standard also adds lactase. Both contain milk, so neither is safe for a milk allergy.

Is Ghost protein gluten free?

Ghost says it is. Its Amazon listing and its own site say gluten free and soy free. Gold Standard’s Amazon listing also says gluten free. We did not see a gluten-free certification named on either brand’s pages.

Does Ghost Whey come in a 5 lb tub?

Not that we could buy. On October 7, 2026 Amazon and Ghost’s own store sold Ghost Whey in 2 lb tubs (Ghost’s store also had 1 lb). That is a big part of why it costs more per gram than Gold Standard, which sells a 5 lb tub.
