Every black seed oil we checked, ranked
We read each label, searched five testing lists for it, and priced it per gram of oil. We rank on two things, in this order: the label prints thymoquinone in mg, then the lowest price per gram. Thymoquinone is the compound brands use to show strength. A teaspoon of oil is about 5 g.
| Black seed oil | Thymoquinone (label) | Per gram | Per serving |
|---|---|---|---|
| | 48 mg per teaspoon | $0.08 | $0.42 |
| | 48 mg per 5 mL | $0.12 | $0.62 |
| | 10 mg per softgel | $0.26 | $0.13 |
| | 25 mg per softgel (5%) Extract, not plain oil | $0.97 | $0.48 |
| | Not stated | $0.12 | $0.53 |
| | Front label: "Min 2%" | $0.15 | $0.73 |
| | Front label: "Min 2%" | $0.21 | $0.41 |
| | Not stated | $0.21 | $0.21 |
| | Not stated | $0.23 | $0.23 |
- Sweet Sunnah ($0.08 a gram) is our pick: the lowest price per gram of the 9, and its label prints 48 mg of thymoquinone per teaspoon. A 16 oz bottle holds 96 teaspoons.
- Amazing Herbs ($0.12 a gram) prints the same 48 mg per serving but costs about 1.5 times as much per gram.
- Health Thru Nutrition ($0.26 a gram) is the best softgel here: its label prints 10 mg of thymoquinone in each 500 mg softgel, and it is the lowest-priced softgel that prints an amount in mg.
- Heritage Store liquid ($0.12 a gram) is the next-cheapest per gram and is USDA Organic; its label does not state thymoquinone.
- Mother Nature Organics softgels ($0.21 a gram) are the lowest-priced softgels per gram; the front says "Min 2%" thymoquinone, but the facts panel gives no amount.
Black seed oil liquid vs capsules
Same oil, different price. A softgel is the oil in a shell. Per gram, the liquids here cost $0.08 to $0.15. Softgels of plain oil cost $0.21 to $0.26, about 2.5 times the cheapest liquid. The difference is bigger at a liquid-sized dose: one teaspoon is about 5 g, the same as ten 500 mg softgels.
| Product | Form | For 5 g of oil |
|---|---|---|
| Sweet Sunnah | About 1 teaspoon | $0.42 |
| Heritage Store | About 1 teaspoon | $0.58 |
| Amazing Herbs | About 1 teaspoon | $0.62 |
| Mother Nature Organics | About 1 teaspoon | $0.73 |
| Mother Nature Organics | 5 softgels | $1.03 |
| Nutricost | 10 softgels | $1.03 |
| NOW | 5 softgels | $1.16 |
| Health Thru Nutrition | 10 softgels | $1.28 |
| Triquetra TQ-Advanced (extract) | 10 softgels | $4.83 |
Softgel labels suggest far less than a teaspoon: 500 mg to 3 g a day. Liquid labels suggest 1 to 2 teaspoons. So a softgel bottle can cost less per day even though it costs more per gram. Health Thru Nutrition's label serving is one 500 mg softgel, $0.13 a day. Sweet Sunnah's is one teaspoon, $0.42 a day. Pick the form you will take every day. Liquid has a strong, bitter taste; the brands suggest mixing it with honey or juice.
What thymoquinone on a black seed oil label means
4 of the 9 labels print thymoquinone in mg. 2 give only a percent, and 3 do not state it. Thymoquinone is the compound in black seed oil that brands use to show strength. The amount varies a lot between products: a 2022 lab study of 11 black seed products found 3 to 809 mg per 100 g (Khaikin et al., Nutrients). That is why we rank labels that print an amount first. A label number is still the brand's claim; we did not lab-test these oils.
- Printed in mg: Sweet Sunnah and Amazing Herbs, 48 mg in 5 g (about 1%). Health Thru Nutrition, 10 mg in 500 mg (2%). Triquetra, 25 mg in 500 mg (5%).
- Percent only: both Mother Nature Organics products say "Min 2%" on the front. On the softgel listing, the main photo says "Min 2%" and another photo of the same bottle says "Min 1%."
- Not stated: Heritage Store, Nutricost and NOW. Their labels give the oil amount only.
- Front vs back: Amazing Herbs' front label says "Contains minimum 1.2%." Its facts panel says 48 mg in 5 g, which works out to about 1%. Sweet Sunnah's listing title says "3X Thymoquinone" but does not say three times what.
- 5% products are extracts. Triquetra calls its oil a 15:1 concentrate standardized to 5%. That is a different product from plain pressed oil, and it costs $0.97 per gram, the most here.
ConsumerLab's public summary of its January 2025 test says 2 of the 7 black seed products it bought held less thymoquinone than their labels claimed. Its brand results are for members only, so we do not repeat them.
Which black seed oils are third-party tested?
0 of 9. We searched each program's own list on October 6, 2026: NSF Certified for Sport, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified, Informed Sport and Informed Choice. A listing counts only if it names the product. No black seed oil is listed in any of them. The only NSF/ANSI 173 listing that names black seed oil is a curcumin softgel that contains some.
Proof: black seed oil on the testing lists
Here is what each brand says about testing. These are the brands' own words, from the Amazon listings we read.
| Brand | What the brand says |
|---|---|
| Sweet Sunnah Liquid | Posts a certificate of analysis for one lot (CKY1024, made October 2024) on its Amazon listing. It lists thymoquinone at 17.1 mg/g. No lab is named on it. |
| Amazing Herbs Liquid | No testing claim on the listing we read. |
| Health Thru Nutrition Softgel | A listing image names three testing labs: Certified Laboratories, Eurofins and Health Level One. No report posted. |
| Triquetra TQ-Advanced Softgel | Listing says "3rd party tested for over 100+ contaminants." No lab or report named. |
| Heritage Store Liquid | Listing says "lab tested for purity and potency." No lab or report named. |
| Mother Nature Organics Liquid | A listing image says "Lab verified." No lab or report named. |
| Mother Nature Organics Softgel | Listing says "each batch is third-party tested." No lab or report named. |
| Nutricost Softgel | Listing badge says "third party tested." No lab or report named. |
| NOW Softgel | Listing names an Intertek GMP certification for its factory and its own in-house labs. No product test named. |
Sweet Sunnah's lot report is the most a brand shows here. It lists 17.1 mg of thymoquinone per gram for that lot, more than the 48 mg per teaspoon (about 9.6 mg per gram) on its label. It covers one lot from 2024, so your bottle may differ. For how the five lists work, see our third-party tested database.
What the labels say

Questions
What is the best black seed oil brand?
Sweet Sunnah, for liquid oil. Its 16 oz bottle costs $0.08 per gram of oil ($0.42 a teaspoon) on Amazon, the lowest of the 9 we checked, and its label prints 48 mg of thymoquinone per teaspoon. For softgels, Health Thru Nutrition: $0.13 a softgel, and its label prints 10 mg of thymoquinone in each 500 mg softgel.
Which black seed oil supplements are third-party tested?
None of the 9 we checked is on a public testing list. We searched NSF Certified for Sport, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified, Informed Sport and Informed Choice on October 6, 2026. Several brands say they test, but that is the brand's own claim. Sweet Sunnah shows a certificate of analysis for one lot on its Amazon listing, and Health Thru Nutrition names three testing labs. Neither is the same as a public registry listing.
Which black seed oil has the highest thymoquinone?
By label percent, Triquetra TQ-Advanced: 25 mg in a 500 mg softgel (5%). It is an extract, a 15:1 concentrate, not plain pressed oil, and it costs $0.97 per gram. Of the plain oils, Health Thru Nutrition prints 2% (10 mg per 500 mg softgel). Sweet Sunnah and Amazing Herbs print 48 mg per teaspoon, about 1%. These are label numbers; we did not lab-test them.
Black seed oil capsules or liquid: which is better?
It is the same oil. Liquid costs less: $0.08 to $0.15 per gram here, vs $0.21 to $0.26 for softgels of plain oil. One teaspoon is about 5 g, the same as ten 500 mg softgels. Softgels skip the strong taste and are easy to count.
Is black seed oil the same as black cumin seed oil?
Yes. Both names mean oil pressed from Nigella sativa seeds. Labels use either name: Nutricost and NOW say "black cumin seed oil," and Sweet Sunnah says both. It is not the cumin spice used in cooking, which comes from a different plant.
What does "5% thymoquinone" mean on black seed oil?
It means the label says 5% of the oil or extract, by weight, is thymoquinone, so a 500 mg softgel holds 25 mg. Plain pressed oils on this page print about 1% to 2%. A 5% product is usually an extract made to hold more. Triquetra prints 5% and calls its product a 15:1 concentrate.
