Quercetin Dosage: How Much Do the Trials Actually Use?

The honest answer

The dose depends entirely on which form you're taking — plain and phytosome are not interchangeable. PLAIN quercetin: the blood-pressure trials used 500–1000 mg/day, and Serban 2016's dose-stratified data found the effect is not significant below 500 mg/day. PHYTOSOME quercetin (Quercefit): the allergy trial (Yamada 2022) used only 200 mg/day, because it reaches up to 20x higher plasma levels per mg (Riva 2019). There's no RDA or upper limit because quercetin isn't an essential nutrient.

Two dose spines, because two forms absorb differently

Quercetin doesn't have one settled dose the way an essential nutrient does — and unlike most "which dose" questions on this site, the split here isn't just about outcome, it's about form. Plain (unformulated) quercetin dihydrate is what the three blood-pressure meta-analyses are built on: Serban 2016 pooled 7 RCTs and found the systolic/diastolic reduction only reached statistical significance at 500 mg/day and up (−4.45 mmHg systolic, P=0.007); below 500 mg/day the pooled effect was not significant (−1.59 mmHg, P=0.273). Huang 2020 (17 RCTs) and Popiolek-Kalisz 2022 (10 RCTs) both used trials in a similar 500–1000 mg/day plain-quercetin range. Phytosome quercetin runs on a completely different number: the one positive allergy trial, Yamada 2022 (n=66 — a single small, industry-associated trial), used just 200 mg/day of Quercetin Phytosome — a fraction of the plain-quercetin dose — because Riva 2019's pharmacokinetic data shows phytosome reaches up to 20 times higher plasma quercetin at the same labeled mg. Never treat a 200–250 mg phytosome dose and a 500–1000 mg plain dose as comparable — they're two different absorption curves, not the same active ingredient in a bigger or smaller pill.

How to think about dose and timing

  • Match the form to the goal. For blood pressure, plain quercetin at 500 mg/day and up is what the trials tested. For allergy symptoms, phytosome at 200 mg/day is the tested dose.
  • Don't stack forms to "double up." Because of the absorption difference, combining a plain-dose product with a phytosome-dose product doesn't have trial support and makes your actual circulating quercetin level unpredictable.
  • Don't treat ~1000 mg/day as long-term-safe. It's the highest dose reasonably covered by safety data (Andres 2018), and no trial ran longer than about 12 weeks.
  • On blood thinners, quinolone antibiotics, or CYP-metabolized drugs? Quercetin can alter how these are metabolized — check with a pharmacist or clinician before adding it.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding? There is no adequate data for quercetin supplementation in this population — check with a clinician, because of the absence of data, not a specific toxicity signal.
