What we excluded, and why
7-keto DHEA (18% of labels). 7-oxo-DHEA is a metabolite that is not converted to testosterone or estrogen. That is its selling point (no hormonal side effects) and also why it cannot do the one thing DHEA is bought for, restoring DHEA-S and the hormones downstream of it. None of the DHEA trials on the hub apply to it; its own evidence for weight loss is a couple of small industry-funded trials. It is sold at 100 mg twice a day, which is most of the 20.7% of labels at 100 mg or more. Products above 50 mg (21.3% of labels). The healthy-adult trials ran at 25 to 75 mg; nothing above that has trial data except a six-week supervised depression study. A 100 mg DHEA capsule is a dose no trial supports and a bottle that cannot be stepped down. Hormone blends (1.7% of labels). DHEA with pregnenolone or 7-keto in one capsule combines an untested dose with an untested partner; the trials used DHEA alone. Brands without an NIH label. DHEA is a hormone, so a mislabeled dose matters; a product whose maker has not filed a label with the NIH has no public record of what it claims to contain, and we do not rank it.
We read 350 DHEA labels: doses, forms and the missing quality marks
Original research350 DHEA labels from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database, 141 brands, read for dose, 7-keto, micronized and sublingual claims, blends, USP statements and warnings. 14 of 16 figures held in both halves of the census; only those are printed.
37.5% of labels deliver exactly 25 mg a serving and 27.1% exactly 50 mg; 21.3% exceed 50 mg. 17.1% claim micronized and 1.7% are sublingual or dissolve-in-mouth, neither of which has an outcome trial behind it. 99.1% of labels carry a hormone or consult-your-physician warning, which is the industry conceding the point the trials make. And 0% state USP Verified: for a hormone sold without a prescription, the shelf offers no independent verification of dose at all, which is why every product ranked here carries an NIH label ID as the next-best paper trail.

Is micronized DHEA better?
Micronizing (grinding the powder finer) is claimed to improve absorption. The pharmacokinetic study that set the trial doses used ordinary 25 and 50 mg tablets and found DHEA-S restored to young-adult levels with a half-life over 20 hours, so absorption of plain DHEA is not the limiting problem. 17.1% of the 350 labels we read claim micronized; it is not a reason to pay more, and not a reason to avoid a product either.
Sublingual or dissolve-in-mouth DHEA: is it different?
A dissolve-in-mouth tablet lets some DHEA absorb through the mouth lining before the rest is swallowed, which the makers argue bypasses first-pass liver conversion to DHEA-S. Since DHEA-S is the reservoir that gives oral DHEA its long half-life, that is not obviously an advantage, and no trial compares the routes on outcomes. 1.7% of labels are sublingual or dissolve-in-mouth. Our pick happens to be one, chosen for its brand's label filing and price, not the route.
Why is 7-keto DHEA not ranked here?
Because it is not DHEA. 7-keto (7-oxo-DHEA) is a metabolite that is not converted to testosterone or estrogen, sold at 100 mg twice a day for weight loss on the strength of a couple of small industry trials. None of the DHEA trials apply to it, and it does not do what someone buying DHEA to restore DHEA-S is trying to do. It is 18% of the shelf and most of the 20.7% of labels at 100 mg or more.
Which DHEA brands are third-party tested?
On the NIH labels, none state USP Verified: 0% of 350. A few brands (Life Extension, Pure Encapsulations, Douglas) publish their own certificates of analysis on request and file every label with the NIH, which is the best available proxy; the products ranked here all carry an NIH label ID. Because DHEA is a hormone, a mislabeled dose matters more than it would for a vitamin, which is one more argument for staying at 25 mg from a brand with a paper trail.
