Selenium Dosage: How Much to Take (and Why More Is Risky)

The RDA is just 55 mcg/day, and most people already get enough from food — so many don't need to supplement at all. The tolerable upper limit is only 400 mcg, an unusually narrow window, and both too little and too much are harmful (a U-shaped curve). The Brazil-nut wildcard
Brazil nuts are the richest food source of selenium, and "two Brazil nuts ≈ the RDA" is a genuine trial-derived shorthand — in one study, 2 nuts/day raised selenium about as much as a 100 mcg supplement (Thomson 2008). But the selenium content varies over a hundredfold depending on where they grew (Chang 1995), so a handful from a high-selenium lot can quietly deliver a supplement-strength dose. If you eat them for selenium, 1–2 a day is plenty — and don't also take a selenium pill.
By goal
- Thyroid / Hashimoto's: ~200 mcg lowers thyroid (TPO) antibodies in meta-analyses (Huwiler 2024) — but that's a lab-marker change, not proven symptom or function benefit. Do it with your doctor, not by over-supplementing.
- Cancer prevention: not supported. SELECT found no benefit, and a Cochrane review of 27,000+ RCT participants agrees (Vinceti 2018).
- Fertility: a network meta-analysis found no significant sperm-quality benefit over placebo (Su 2021).
- Deficiency: the one clear indication — low-soil regions, IV nutrition, malabsorption.
If you have a reason to supplement
200 mcg (the thyroid-study dose) — only if directed. Most people should get selenium from food, not a pill. Lowest cost per day.
