Buying the 2 lb bag? Then Gold Standard costs less. Ascent’s 2 lb bag is $1.90 per 25 g of protein. The savings come from the 4 lb bag. See the math.

Price: Ascent’s 4 lb bag costs about 26% less per gram of protein

On Amazon (October 5, 2026), Ascent’s 4 lb bag is $62.11 for 58 scoops of 25 g, or 1,450 g of protein. That is $1.07 per 25 g. Gold Standard’s 5 lb tub is $102.81 for 74 scoops of 24 g, or 1,776 g of protein. That is $1.45 per 25 g. At 25 g of protein a day, Gold Standard costs about $11.29 more a month.

Amazon prices checked October 5, 2026. Cost per 25 g of protein = price ÷ (scoops × grams of protein per scoop) × 25.

Gold Standard, 5 lb tub$102.8174$1.45
Ascent, 2 lb bag$54.9929$1.90

Amazon prices move, and Ascent’s own store charges more for the 4 lb bag than Amazon did today. To check a price you see, divide it by the scoops, then by the grams of protein per scoop, and multiply by 25.

Per scoop: close, with a few real differences

Both have 120 calories a scoop. Ascent has 25 g of protein and Gold Standard has 24 g, from the same size scoop. Both blend whey isolate with whey concentrate. The bigger differences are the sweetener and the flavoring: Ascent uses stevia and natural flavors; Gold Standard uses acesulfame potassium and natural and artificial flavor.

Per scoop, from each label (Ascent Vanilla Bean, Gold Standard Double Rich Chocolate). These are the brands’ own figures; we did not lab-test them. Other flavors differ a little.

Ascent calls its whey “native,” which it describes as filtered directly from milk. That is the brand’s own description of how it is made. For muscle, the labels give no reason to expect a different result if you get the same protein. How much you need a day: protein dosage guide.

If lactose bothers you, Gold Standard adds lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose. Ascent does not. Both contain whey concentrate, and both labels list milk and soy, so neither is safe for a milk allergy.

Testing: Informed Sport checks every Ascent batch

Both are on a testing list run by LGC, a company with an anti-doping lab. They are on different lists, and the lists work differently.

Ascent on Informed Sport

Testing matters most if you get drug-tested for sport or work. For everyone else, it shows an outside lab checks the product where anyone can look it up. It does not make the protein work better.

How we checked this

We searched each program’s own list for both brands on October 5, 2026. Informed Sport’s only Gold Standard whey is “Gold Standard 100% Whey Elite Series,” sold in Europe, not the US tub. Ascent’s Amazon page says “Informed Choice Certified,” but the October 2026 Informed Choice list does not name Ascent; we count only what the lists show.

What the labels say

Ascent’s label has no artificial flavor or sweetener. Gold Standard’s has both, plus cocoa and lactase. Gold Standard’s image is the label NSF keeps for its 10 lb tub: a 30.4 g scoop with the same 24 g of protein as the 5 lb tub’s 31 g scoop.

The label attached to ON's NSF Certified for Sport listing for Double Rich Chocolate, which covers only the 10 lb tub. It lists a 30.4 g scoop; the 5 lb tub we link lists a 31 g scoop. Both give 24 g of protein a scoop, with the same ingredients.

Questions

Is Ascent protein third party tested?

Yes. Informed Sport lists Ascent 100% Whey Protein Powder Blend for North America. Informed Sport tests every batch for substances banned in sport before it is sold, and posts the batches by flavor; the newest Vanilla Bean batch on the list was tested September 28, 2026. We did not find Ascent whey on NSF Certified for Sport, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified or Informed Choice (searched October 5, 2026).

Is Ascent protein NSF certified?

No. We searched NSF Certified for Sport and NSF/ANSI 173 on October 5, 2026 and found no Ascent products. Its testing is through Informed Sport. If your sport requires NSF, Gold Standard is on NSF Certified for Sport, but only in the 10 lb tubs.

Is Ascent protein isolate?

Partly. The label lists a whey protein isolate blend first (native whey isolate and whey isolate), then whey protein concentrate. So it is a blend, like Gold Standard, which lists whey isolate, whey concentrate and whey peptides. A scoop of Ascent has 25 g of protein and 2 g of carbs.

Is Ascent protein good?

Yes, for most people. Each 31 g scoop has 25 g of protein, 1 g of sugar and a short ingredient list sweetened with stevia, and every batch is tested by Informed Sport. In the 4 lb bag on Amazon it costs $1.07 per 25 g of protein, less than Gold Standard’s 5 lb tub at $1.45. The 2 lb bag costs more: $1.90 per 25 g.
