MSM Dosage: How Much to Take (1.5–6 g/day)
Educational summary — not medical advice. Doses below reflect what clinical trials used; they aren't a prescription. The honest answer
The MSM doses used in trials range from about 1.5 to 6 grams per day. Knee-osteoarthritis pilots used roughly 3–6 g/day (Kim 2006, 6 g; Debbi 2011, ~3.4 g), while exercise-recovery pilots used 1.5–3 g/day (Kalman 2012; Withee 2017). A sensible practical target is ~3 g/day. MSM is GRAS and well tolerated up to ~4 g/day (Butawan 2017). Since the molecule is identical across brands, the real question is how many grams you want — and how cheaply you buy them.
What the trials actually dosed
Because MSM is a commodity molecule, the dose is just a question of grams — there's no "form" or hidden active to convert. Here's the range the evidence actually used, so you can pick a target honestly:
| Use | Dose used | What it showed |
|---|---|---|
| Knee OA (Kim 2006) | 6 g/day | Improved WOMAC pain and physical function (small pilot; significance only) |
| Knee OA (Debbi 2011) | ~3.4 g/day | Physical function & total WOMAC significant; pain not significant (p=0.08) |
| Exercise recovery (Withee 2017) | 3 g/day (OptiMSM) | Post-exercise pain down clinically, not statistically; no effect on damage markers |
| Exercise recovery (Kalman 2012) | 1.5 & 3 g/day | n=8 pilot; soreness/fatigue trends only |
| Safety ceiling (Butawan 2017) | up to ~4 g/day | GRAS; well tolerated, mild side effects |
Note the honest limits: the osteoarthritis pilots are small and short, and in Debbi 2011 the pain benefit did not reach statistical significance — the significant gains were in physical function. See does MSM work? for the full evidence read.
Checker: how many servings to hit 3 g?
Enter the MSM mg per serving from your product's Supplement Facts panel and how many servings you plan to take per day. It shows your total grams per day, where that lands in the 1.5–6 g trial range, and how many servings it takes to reach a 3 g target.
Where to find the number: look for "Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) ___ mg" per serving. A capsule is often 1,000–1,500 mg; a powder scoop is often 1,000–3,000 mg. For a blend that doesn't break out the MSM mg, you can't use this — and that's a reason to buy MSM standalone (why).
How to take it
- Pick a target in the 1.5–6 g/day range — ~3 g/day is a reasonable middle; the OA pilots leaned higher (up to 6 g), recovery pilots lower (1.5–3 g).
- Start low and build up. Begin around 1.5–2 g/day and increase gradually; MSM is well tolerated to ~4 g/day, with mild GI side effects the most common (Butawan 2017).
- Use powder for multi-gram doses. Hitting 3 g from 1,000 mg capsules means three pills; a measured scoop of powder is usually far cheaper per gram (cost per gram).
- Give it time and set honest expectations. The OA trials ran for weeks; the evidence is modest and function-leaning, not a fast pain fix (the evidence).

Frequently asked questions
How much MSM should I take per day?
Trials used ~1.5–6 g/day (OA pilots ~3–6 g; recovery pilots 1.5–3 g). A practical target is ~3 g/day. MSM is GRAS and well tolerated to ~4 g/day (Butawan 2017). Start low and build up.
Is 3 grams of MSM a lot?
No — it's a mid-range dose, between the 1.5 g of some recovery pilots and the 6 g of one OA trial, and below the ~4 g/day described as well tolerated. Many capsules are only 1,000–1,500 mg, so 3 g means 2–3 of them.
How many capsules reach the studied dose?
Depends on the mg per capsule: three 1,000 mg capsules or two 1,500 mg capsules reach 3 g. Check the MSM mg per serving, then compare cost per gram — powder usually reaches multi-gram doses far more cheaply.
Is MSM safe to take daily?
It has a good profile: GRAS and well tolerated to ~4 g/day, with mild GI effects or occasional headache (Butawan 2017). The trials are small and short, so check with a clinician if you're pregnant, on medication, or managing a condition.
Does MSM have side effects, and who should be cautious?
MSM is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) and well tolerated up to ~4 g/day. The most common complaints are mild GI effects — nausea, bloating, loose stools — which tend to ease if you start low and build up gradually. Talk to your clinician before starting it if you take medications or have a health condition.
