The amount of chromium you actually need is small: the NIH lists an adequate intake of ~35 mcg/day for adult men (~25 mcg for women), with no RDA and no Upper Limit. Yet the shelf runs 200–1000 mcg — roughly 6–29× that adequate intake. Those doses simply mirror the glucose trials (which were modest and mixed), and a bigger number is not a bigger benefit: absorption is low and there's no clean dose-response. More isn't safer either — rare renal case reports exist at very high doses.
The key thing most people get wrong: the number is huge relative to what you need
Chromium's reference intake is tiny. Because the evidence wasn't strong enough to set an RDA, the NIH uses an adequate intake (AI) instead — about 35 mcg/day for adult men and ~25 mcg for adult women — and there is no Tolerable Upper Intake Level. Most people get this from food.
