A rapid strip is a lateral-flow cassette, the pregnancy-test format, that changes color in the presence of vitamin D binding; you compare the line to a printed card in 15 minutes. No laboratory sees the sample, no reference method checks it, and the makers on this page publish no validation, even where a listing claims a percentage accuracy. The two sell side by side at a 6.8× price gap and the listings do nothing to tell them apart.
Does a finger-prick blood spot measure vitamin D properly?
Yes, when a laboratory measures it. A 2026 clinical validation collected venous plasma, venous whole blood, venous dried blood spots and capillary (finger-prick) dried blood spots from 44 healthy volunteers and analysed all of them by validated LC-MS/MS. No clinically relevant differences arose from the method or the sampling site; after a hematocrit-based conversion, 90% of capillary blood-spot results fell within 20% of the measured plasma value, and agreement on vitamin D status classification was substantial (weighted kappa 0.83 to 0.85) regardless of how hematocrit was estimated, which the authors describe as clearing the path from lab sampling to home sampling (Heughebaert 2026, PMID 41222598). That is the evidence a mail-in kit rests on. The lateral-flow strips have nothing comparable: we found no published comparison of any consumer vitamin D cassette against a laboratory 25(OH)D measurement.
When to test, and what the number means
The Endocrine Society’s 2024 guideline suggests against routine 25(OH)D testing in every population it considered, including people with obesity or dark complexion, because no trial evidence supports screening the general population and the decision to take vitamin D at the RDA does not depend on the result (Demay 2024, PMID 38828931). Test when there is a clinical question the number answers: malabsorption or bariatric surgery, osteoporosis or a fracture, a symptom a clinician is investigating, a drug that affects vitamin D, or a correction dose you need to know when to stop. The Society’s 2011 treatment guideline defines deficiency as a 25(OH)D below 20 ng/mL and aims for 30 ng/mL in people being treated (Holick 2011, PMID 21646368); the Institute of Medicine regards 20 ng/mL as adequate for bone health in most people.
