What a normal glucose trace looks like

The reason to read this before buying a sensor is that the app will show you spikes, and you need to know which ones are normal. The reference dataset is a multicenter study that put blinded Dexcom sensors on 153 healthy, non-obese, non-diabetic people aged 7 to 80 for up to 10 days. Mean glucose was 98 to 99 mg/dL in every age group except the over-60s (104), the median person spent 96% of the time between 70 and 140 mg/dL, exceeded 140 for a median 2.1% of the day (about 30 minutes), dipped below 70 for 1.1% (about 15 minutes), and had a within-person variability of 17% (Shah 2019, PMID 31127824). A post-meal rise above 140 that comes back down within an hour or two is what healthy looks like; the numbers the consumer apps color amber are, in this dataset, half an hour of an ordinary day.

Does wearing one help if you do not have diabetes?

That is the question the sales copy answers and the literature answers more narrowly. A 2026 systematic review pooled every study of CGM in people without diabetes it could find, 23 of them (7 randomized), covering 1,074 people in 11 countries, most of them lifestyle programs that used the sensor as feedback. Mean glucose improved against controls (standardized mean difference -0.54, P = 0.03); body-mass index did not (P = 0.19); adherence to the programs was higher; and the glucose benefit was concentrated in people with prediabetes, with no appreciable benefit in people whose glucose was already normal. The authors’ conclusion is that a CGM works as a biofeedback tool inside a structured program and is unlikely to manage weight on its own (Liao 2026, PMID 41588451). What a sensor reliably provides is a personal answer to a specific question: what does this meal, this walk, this night’s sleep do to my glucose. That is worth a few weeks and $91. It is not a demonstrated way to lose weight, and both makers’ own labelling markets it as information, not treatment. Pair it with the berberine evidence if that is why you are here, and with a fasting glucose or HbA1c from a lab if the sensor shows you something you did not expect.

Over-the-counter glucose biosensors are a new FDA category, and as of 2026-09-19 it contains these two. Both are cleared for adults who do not use insulin, both use the makers’ prescription sensor hardware, and both explicitly exclude people who need hypoglycemia alarms. On accuracy, Abbott’s current 15-day Libre sensors, the family Lingo is drawn from, reported a mean absolute relative difference of 8.2% against a laboratory reference in 149 adults, with 94.2% of readings within 20% of the reference (Alva 2026, PMID 40183340). Stelo is built on Dexcom’s prescription-sensor platform and its performance figures are in the clearance summary for K262472. Anything else sold as a “CGM for non-diabetics” is either one of these two under a subscription brand or a prescription device being resold.

Both makers exclude people on insulin, people on dialysis and anyone with problematic hypoglycemia, and Stelo's Amazon listing adds anyone with a history of an eating disorder or who would change medication without a clinician. The alerts are not the urgent low-glucose alarms of the prescription devices. If you have diabetes, a prescription CGM with alarms is the right product and is often covered.
