The Best Protein Bars of 2026
The best protein bar for most people is Quest: 21 g of milk protein and 1 g of sugar, $2.20 a bar on Amazon. We checked the labels of 19 top protein bars against four things that matter most: enough protein, little sugar, no collagen in the protein, and no maltitol or sorbitol. Quest is one of only 3 that pass all four.

Why we pick it Of the 3 bars that pass every check, it ranks highest in Amazon’s Protein Bars sales. Its protein is milk and whey, which is complete and rich in leucine, and it has 12 g of added fiber to keep you full.
What you give up It is sweetened with erythritol (what the research says). If you have heart disease or have had a stroke or blood clot, buy KIND Protein MAX instead; it has no erythritol. Quest is not on a testing list for drugs banned in sport.
What to look for on a protein bar label
We checked every bar on this page for the same four things. A bar that passes all four gives you a full serving of real protein without much sugar or a sweetener likely to upset your stomach.
- 20 g of protein or more. In young men who lift, 20 g of whey at one time was enough for close to the full muscle-repair response, and 40 g added a little more (Witard 2014). The International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests 20 to 40 g a meal.
- 5 g of sugar or less. A bar with 15 to 30 g of sugar is closer to a candy bar.
- No collagen in the protein. Collagen is missing tryptophan, one of the essential amino acids, so it is an incomplete protein (Paul 2019). US labels count collagen in the protein grams, and they do not say how much of the protein it is. Collagen is not harmful, but it is low in leucine and the other essential amino acids that drive muscle repair (Jäger 2017), so its grams do less for muscle than milk, egg or soy protein.
- No maltitol or sorbitol. These sugar alcohols are the ones most likely to cause gas, bloating and loose stools (Mäkinen 2016).
Two more things on the label
“Net carbs” is the brand’s own math. US labels do not define it. Brands subtract fiber and sugar alcohols from total carbs, so compare total carbohydrate, fiber and sugar instead.
Check that the serving is one bar. A few labels list the numbers for a two-bar pack, which makes protein and calories hard to compare.
Other good bars for specific needs
Quest fits most people. These bars fit one need better, and each says which of our checks it misses.
Best without erythritol: KIND Protein MAX
It also passes all four checks, and it has no maltitol, sorbitol or erythritol. It is sweetened with allulose, a rare sugar that does not count as sugar on the label. Very large amounts of allulose can upset the stomach (Han 2018), far more than one bar holds. Its protein comes from soy and peanuts. It has 9 g of added fiber, which can cause gas if you are not used to it. It costs $0.41 less than Quest for each 20 g of protein.
KIND Protein MAX
20 g protein · $1.68 a bar
Best vegan bar: No Cow
It is the only bar labeled vegan of the 19 we checked that passes all four checks: 20 g of rice and pea protein and 1 g of sugar. It has 16 g of added fiber, which can cause gas if you are not used to it. KIND Protein MAX has no milk on its label either, but it is not labeled vegan.
No Cow Protein Bar
20 g protein · $2.50 a bar
Most protein per calorie: David
David packs 28 g of protein into 150 calories on the label. It misses two of our checks: part of its protein is collagen, and it uses maltitol. A 2026 lawsuit says a lab measured more calories than the label shows; David says that lab test does not suit the fat it uses, which the body absorbs less of. The case is not decided.

28 g protein · $3.25 a bar
For drug-tested athletes: Gatorade Recover
Buy a bar on a testing list your sport accepts. Gatorade Recover bars are on NSF Certified for Sport, which tests for drugs banned in sport. They are made for after hard training, so they carry 29 g of sugar on purpose; skip them as an everyday snack.
Gatorade Recover Bar
20 g protein · $1.91 a bar
Lowest cost per gram of protein: Pure Protein
It costs $1.51 for 20 g of protein, against $2.09 for Quest. It misses two checks: part of its protein is collagen, and it uses maltitol. If maltitol does not bother your stomach, it is a fine budget bar.
Pure Protein Bar
21 g protein · $1.58 a bar
Shop at Costco?
Costco’s own Kirkland Signature protein bars would pass all four checks on the labels we could read: an older US box shown on Amazon lists 21 g of protein, 1 g of sugar and erythritol, and Costco Canada’s ingredient list shows milk and whey protein. Costco does not sell them on Amazon, so they are not in our table. Amazon resellers ask about $2.20 a bar; check the price at your Costco.
All 19 protein bars compared
These are the top sellers in Amazon’s Protein Bars category, plus the bars other guides pick most, that the brand or Amazon itself sells. We read a label for each of the 19 bars on October 18, 2026 (for the flavor we link wherever the brand, Amazon or a store shows it), and priced each box on Amazon on October 23, 2026. Only 3 of the 19 products pass all four checks. They are listed with our picks first, then by how many checks each one passes, then by cost.

Is erythritol safe?
The research is not settled. In a 2023 study of about 4,000 people sent for heart testing, those with the most erythritol in their blood had about twice the rate of heart attack, stroke or death over 3 years as those with the least, and erythritol made blood platelets clump more easily in the lab (Witkowski 2023). That shows a link, not proof that erythritol caused the problems. Most people in the study already had heart disease or its risk factors. That makes the result most important for people like them. The authors called for long-term safety studies. If you have heart disease or have had a stroke or blood clot, choose a bar without erythritol, such as KIND Protein MAX.
Common questions about protein bars
What is the best protein bar?
Quest, for most people (21 g of protein, 1 g of sugar). To avoid erythritol, buy KIND Protein MAX. If you are vegan, buy No Cow.
Why do some protein bars upset my stomach?
Usually the sugar alcohols. Maltitol and sorbitol are not fully absorbed, so they can cause gas, bloating and loose stools, mostly in people not used to them. Erythritol rarely does (Mäkinen 2016). Check the ingredient list for maltitol, maltitol syrup or sorbitol. Large amounts of added fiber, like the soluble corn fiber, tapioca fiber or chicory root fiber in many bars, can cause gas too.
Are protein bars good for weight loss?
They can help if one replaces a less filling snack. In a small trial in women, a 160-calorie high-protein yogurt eaten in the afternoon eased hunger and led to a smaller dinner than 160 calories of chocolate (Ortinau 2014). That study did not test bars. A bar does not burn fat on its own; total calories still decide weight loss.
Is it OK to eat a protein bar every day?
For most people, yes, if it fits your calories and you still eat whole foods. Pick one that passes our checks, so you are not adding sugar or a sweetener that upsets your stomach every day. If you have kidney disease, ask your doctor how much protein is right for you.
Are protein bars OK if you have diabetes?
Often, yes, if you pick one low in sugar. Quest, KIND Protein MAX and No Cow each have 1 g of sugar. Look at total carbs and fiber too, and ask your doctor or dietitian how a bar fits your plan, especially if you take insulin or a drug that can cause low blood sugar.
Is whey or plant protein better in a bar?
Both work. Milk and whey protein (Quest) is complete and rich in leucine, the amino acid most linked to muscle repair. Plant bars like No Cow mix rice and pea protein so the blend covers all the essential amino acids; they suit vegans and people who avoid dairy.
Can a protein bar replace a meal?
Now and then, not every day. Most bars have 150 to 250 calories, less than a meal, and none of them has the vegetables, fruit and variety a meal gives you. A bigger bar like MET-Rx Big 100 has more calories, but also more sugar.
How other review sites ranked protein bars
Read in October 2026: Healthline ranks RXBAR first, and BarBend and Garage Gym Reviews rank Transparent Labs Protein+ first. RXBAR has 12 g of protein and 14 g of sugar from dates, and Transparent Labs has 15 g of protein and 10 g of sugar; both miss our protein check. Garage Gym Reviews names Barebells the best-tasting bar. None of those guides prints a cost per gram of protein. They taste-test; we do not, so among bars that pass every check we use Amazon sales rank as the tie-breaker.
How we checked these bars
We started from the top sellers in Amazon’s Protein Bars category, added the bars other guides pick most, and kept the ones the brand or Amazon itself sells. For each, we read the label for the flavor we link: on the brand’s own site where it publishes one, otherwise on the Amazon listing’s label photo or a store’s label. We checked NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport and Informed Choice for each brand’s bars; of the 19 bars here, only Gatorade Recover and Transparent Labs are listed. Where a pending lawsuit disputes a number we print, such as calories or grams of protein, we say so. Prices are the Amazon price of the box we link, updated each day. More on our method.
