The short answer

Three things are sold as "ginseng," and only two are. Asian/Korean Panax ginseng is the researched plant. American ginseng (P. quinquefolius) is a genuine Panax with ginsenosides but a different profile. "Siberian ginseng" (Eleuthero) is not a ginseng at all — zero ginsenosides; its actives are eleutherosides (MSKCC). And even within genuine Panax, ginsenoside content varies 15–36 fold vs label (Harkey 2001). Of 9 products we track, 4 aren't Asian Panax and only 2 disclose a %.

"Siberian ginseng" isn't ginseng

This is the sharpest trap. Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) was popularized as "Siberian ginseng," but it's a different plant in a different genus, and it contains no ginsenosides whatsoever. Its active compounds are eleutherosides, chemically unrelated to ginseng's actives. Memorial Sloan Kettering's herb monograph states plainly that eleuthero is not a true ginseng (MSKCC Siberian Ginseng monograph). So a bottle labeled only "Siberian ginseng" can't be compared to Panax ginseng on ginsenosides at all — there are none to compare.

American ginseng is real — but it's a different species

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is a genuine Panax and does contain ginsenosides, so it's not a fraud — but it has a different ginsenoside profile than Asian Panax ginseng and a different traditional reputation. The practical consequence: you can't assume Asian-ginseng research applies to it. Two of the most-cited "ginseng" findings actually used American ginseng — a cancer-fatigue trial and a warfarin-interaction study — so they belong to P. quinquefolius, not P. ginseng (see does it work, where we label every study by species). Even genuine Panax hides its dose: 15–36 fold variation

Getting the species right is only half the battle. Among genuine ginseng products, the ginsenoside content itself is wildly inconsistent. An analysis of 25 commercial ginseng preparations found ginsenoside content varying about 15 to 36 fold relative to label claims (Harkey 2001) — more than an order of magnitude between products that look similar on the shelf. Because most labels never print a ginsenoside percentage in the first place, you usually can't tell which end of that range you're buying, which is why cost per active ginsenoside is incomputable for most of the field.

Put together First check the species (is it Asian Panax ginseng, not American and definitely not Eleuthero), then check whether the ginsenoside % is disclosed. Two filters — and most products fail at least one. Of 9 we track, 5 are genuine Asian Panax ginseng and only 2 disclose a ginsenoside %.

The blend problem

A "ginseng complex" that combines Asian Panax, American ginseng, and red ginseng — sometimes with Eleuthero folded in — sounds thorough, but it makes the active content less knowable. You can't attribute a ginsenoside dose to any single species, the most-researched species may be a minor fraction, and any Eleuthero in the mix contributes zero ginsenosides. A blend trades a clean single-species comparison for marketing breadth.

What to actually do

  • Read the Latin name, not the marketing name. Want the researched plant? Look for Panax ginseng. "Siberian ginseng" means Eleuthero — a different plant with no ginsenosides.
  • Don't assume American = Asian. P. quinquefolius is real ginseng but a different species; match it to studies done in American ginseng, not Asian.
  • Prefer a disclosed ginsenoside % over a big root number. With 15–36 fold variation, an undisclosed "root 1120 mg" is unknowable — see the full comparison.
