Best EAA Supplement 2026: Powder vs Capsules by Cost per Gram
Informational summary, not medical advice. This page ranks product value; on whether you need an EAA product at all, see the hub and EAA vs. BCAA vs. whey. This statement has not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
Most people already get essential amino acids from the protein they eat: if you buy them anyway, BulkSupplements Essential Amino Acids Powder (500 g, Unflavored) is cheapest per gram at $0.048/g, a bulk powder, which is $0.38 for an 8 g dose. Kion Aminos Essential Amino Acids Capsules (210 ct) is priciest at $0.366/g, a 7.6x spread for the same category of ingredient. Bulk powder runs $0.048–$0.083/gram; capsules run $0.132–$0.366/gram, up to 7.6x more for the same 9 amino acids, mostly paying for convenience.

The one-line takeaway Every product here discloses total EAA grams per serving at its label weight. The real lever is form: bulk powder is 7.6x cheaper per gram than the priciest capsule, and the flavored Nutricost powder costs slightly more for palatability, not a different EAA dose. But the honest first question is whether you need an EAA product at all, see EAA vs. BCAA vs. whey before you buy.
Every product compared: cost per gram of EAA
Sorted cheapest per gram first, ranked at an effective 8g EAA dose, the low end of typical retail daily dosing and a well-studied range. Full data is a public CC BY JSON file.

Three things worth reading before you buy
Powder vs. capsule is most of the price spread. Every product in this comparison discloses its total EAA content directly at label serving, there is no salt-conversion to adjust for. The 7.6x price spread is packaging and form: bulk unflavored powder (BulkSupplements) costs a fraction per gram of the premium capsule (Kion). If you're taking a daily 8-10g dose, that spread compounds fast.
Capsule serving sizes differ. Nutricost's EAA Capsules list at $18.95, the second-lowest price in this comparison, but its 1.2g label serving means a realistic 8g dose takes roughly 7 servings, about 14 capsules. Judge capsule products by cost per gram, not the number on the front of the bottle.
Only NAKED discloses its BCAA sub-breakdown. NAKED's label states 2.4g leucine, 1.2g isoleucine, and 1.2g valine within its 10g EAA blend (a 2:1:1 BCAA ratio), useful if you want to gauge leucine content directly. The other products state a 2:1:1 BCAA inclusion but don't break out exact leucine grams in their retailer listings; check the physical supplement-facts panel if a leucine-weighted formula matters to you (see the dosage guide).
None of these substitute for total daily protein
Every product ranked here is a 9-EAA blend, which is a genuine step up from a 3-of-9 BCAA product, but whey protein is already roughly 45-50% EAA by weight, and two trials found small EAA doses matched much larger whey doses for acute muscle protein synthesis in older women (see EAA vs. BCAA vs. whey). If your goal is building or maintaining muscle and you're not already hitting your total protein target, fixing that gap with food or a whole-protein source is the evidence-preferred first move; an EAA product is a convenience layer on top, not a substitute.
Third-party testing: one product is registry-confirmed
BulkSupplements Essential Amino Acids Powder is registry-confirmed in NSF/ANSI 173. For the other products, we did not find them in a public certification registry; any certification named in a listing is the brand’s own statement. EAAs are a simple, well-characterized amino-acid blend rather than a botanical extract, but if third-party verification matters to you, check each brand’s current listing and Certificate of Analysis directly before buying.

What we could and could not verify about Essential Amino Acids (EAA)
1 of the 6 is confirmed in NSF/ANSI 173: BulkSupplements Essential Amino Acids Powder (500 g, Unflavored). The other 5 products we track are not listed in any registry we checked. That means nobody independent has confirmed them; it is not evidence against them.
Method: our Essential Amino Acids (EAA) roster matched against the full public registries of third-party-certified supplements in the US, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified and Informed Sport, 5,317 listings, retrieved 2026-08-25. Absence means nobody independent has checked that Essential Amino Acids (EAA) product, not that it failed. Full method and limitations.

Three checks on the Amazon listing itself
- Who is selling it. The “Sold by” line should read the brand, Amazon, or the brand’s named distributor.
- The lot and the expiry on arrival. For a product with a certificate lookup or a registry listing, the lot number on the container is what you check, not the listing. A lot older than the certificate date, or an expiry inside a year, is a reason to return it.
- The serving count, not the piece count. The per-day figures above use the label’s serving; a listing that says “240 count” at two pieces a serving is 120 days, so compare cost per serving rather than cost per piece.

What the trials say about EAAs, and about the dose
The reason to buy all nine essential amino acids rather than the three branched-chain ones is measured, not marketed. A review of the human evidence found no study in which orally ingested BCAAs alone were shown to raise muscle protein synthesis; the two infusion studies available found BCAAs alone reduced muscle protein turnover, because the other six essential amino acids needed to build new protein can only come from breaking muscle down (Wolfe 2017, PMID 28852372). In young adults, a balanced free-form EAA formulation combined with whey was several times more anabolic per gram than a whey-based recovery drink, and the response rose with the dose, 3.2 g of EAA per serving at one or two servings (Park 2020, PMID 32041644). In older adults the composition matters as much as the amount: a 6.7 g EAA dose with a whey-like 26% leucine did not raise muscle protein synthesis, while the same dose enriched to 41% leucine did (Katsanos 2006, PMID 16507602).
Read against the products above, that gives three practical rules. First, per gram of EAA is the right unit, and the 8 g serving this page prices is in the range the trials used, not below it. Second, the leucine share on the label is worth checking, and a product that does not print its amino acid breakdown cannot be judged on it. Third, none of this makes an EAA powder necessary for someone already eating enough protein; the Wolfe review’s point is that the whole protein, or the whole EAA set, is what works, and food supplies both.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best EAA supplement?
Cheapest per gram: BulkSupplements Essential Amino Acids Powder (500 g, Unflavored) at 0.048/g, a bulk powder, but see whether you need one at all first.
Should I even buy an EAA product?
Maybe not if you already eat adequate protein, whey is already ~45-50% EAA and matched small EAA doses in two trials.
Why is powder so much cheaper than capsules?
You're paying for encapsulation and convenience, the trade-off is mixing a scoop vs. swallow-and-go.
Why does the cheap-sticker capsule cost more per gram?
Its 1.2g serving is 2 capsules, so an 8g dose takes roughly 7 servings, about 14 capsules.
