What EAAs are, and why "9 of 9" is the real pitch
Essential amino acids are the 9 amino acids the body cannot synthesize and must get from food or supplements: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. BCAAs — leucine, isoleucine, and valine, the live BCAA cluster on this site — are just 3 of those 9. EAA products are marketed as the "complete" alternative: all 9, not just 3, and that framing has real mechanistic support. The other 6 essential amino acids that BCAA-only products don't supply are needed to sustain new muscle protein synthesis past the initial trigger, not just start it.
Thread one: EAAs beat BCAAs, but the margin is real, modest, and hedged
Moberg et al. 2016, a 4-arm crossover trial in 8 trained volunteers, found the anabolic-signaling response (S6K1 phosphorylation) at 90 minutes post-exercise followed a clear order: Placebo<Leucine<BCAA<EAA, with EAA producing a 9-fold increase. But by 180 minutes the EAA-vs-BCAA gap had disappeared, and the authors' own conclusion states plainly: "this effect is primarily attributable to the BCAA." Aguilera et al. 2025, the most recent and most direct EAA-vs-BCAA head-to-head (n=12, crossover), found a dileucine-enhanced EAA formula and a plain BCAA blend produced statistically similar whole-body leucine retention after resistance exercise (P=0.68) — on that trial's primary endpoint, EAA did not clearly outperform BCAA. Thread two: redundant if you're already eating enough protein
This is the load-bearing honest point for the whole cluster. Whey protein is roughly 45-50% EAA by weight and already delivers a complete, leucine-adequate amino acid profile. Bukhari et al. 2015 found a 3g leucine-enriched EAA dose matched a 20g whey dose for acute muscle protein synthesis in older women, and Wilkinson et al. 2018 found even a 1.5g EAA dose (0.6g leucine) "robustly, perhaps maximally" stimulated synthesis, with "negligible trophic advantage" from larger EAA doses or 40g whey. Both trials disclose a co-author affiliated with Ajinomoto, a major amino-acid manufacturer. Read together, these findings cut both ways: efficient for EAA marketing, but also proof that whey isn't meaningfully behind a purified EAA product for someone already protein-adequate.
Thread three: the real niche is older adults, and even that's split
Paddon-Jones et al. 2004 and Katsanos et al. 2006 show EAAs do stimulate muscle protein synthesis in elderly subjects, sometimes requiring a higher leucine proportion to do it. But Moro et al. 2018 found healthy older adults' MPS response to EAA was already normal — not "anabolic resistant" — whether or not they'd done resistance training, narrowing the sales pitch to frailer or less-healthy seniors. And Godard et al. 2002, a real 12-week strength-training study, found daily oral amino-acid provision added no measurable strength or size benefit over resistance training alone in older men.
