Taurine Benefits: What the Human Evidence Actually Shows

Educational summary of published research — not medical advice. Taurine is well tolerated for most people; avoid high doses if you have kidney disease, and talk to a doctor before using it as a heart-failure adjunct or if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Two benefits have real, separately-earned human evidence: blood pressure and exercise endurance. A low-heterogeneity meta-analysis found taurine meaningfully lowers resting blood pressure at around 1.5 g/day, and it modestly improves exercise endurance at 1–6 g. There's also genuine, if older and smaller, evidence for taurine as an adjunct in heart failure, alongside prescribed therapy. What it is not proven to do: reverse aging in humans — the famous 2023 headlines came from mice and monkeys, and a 2025 human study found no link — or give you the "energy" in energy drinks, which is the caffeine. It's also worth knowing this is a conditionally essential amino acid that comes mainly from animal foods, which matters more if you're vegan.

Blood pressure: the best-supported benefit

This is where taurine has the cleanest human evidence. A 2018 meta-analysis pooling seven randomized controlled trials found taurine lowered resting systolic blood pressure (Hedges' g −0.70) and diastolic pressure (g −0.62), with essentially zero heterogeneity across the studies — an unusually consistent result for a supplement (Waldron 2018, PMID: 30006901). The standout trial behind that pool gave prehypertensive adults 1,600 mg/day for 12 weeks: systolic pressure fell about 7 mmHg in the taurine group versus roughly 2.6 mmHg on placebo, a net effect around 4.5 mmHg, alongside measurable improvements in vascular function (Sun 2016, PMID: 26781281). A 4.5 mmHg systolic reduction is modest on its own but clinically meaningful at a population level, and it costs pennies a day. Exercise performance and recovery: real, but don't oversell it

Taurine's other separately-earned benefit is endurance exercise. A 2018 meta-analysis concluded that single doses of 1–6 g, taken before exercise, could meaningfully improve endurance performance (Waldron 2018, PMID: 29546641). That's the number most "taurine for exercise" content leans on. But a more recent 2025 meta-analytic review focused specifically on the acute, single-dose question was more cautious, finding the effect smaller and less consistent across studies than the earlier work implied (Deng 2025, PMID: 40852891). The honest summary: a plausible, low-risk aid for endurance and recovery, worth 1–6 g before a session if you want to try it, but not a reliable performance booster on the order of creatine or caffeine.

A genuine therapeutic use: heart failure, as an adjunct

This is real clinical evidence, not a wellness claim — but it is an adjunct, never a substitute for prescribed treatment. One of the oldest pieces of taurine research is a 1985 double-blind crossover trial in 14 patients with congestive heart failure: taurine improved their NYHA functional class compared with placebo (Azuma 1985, PMID: 3888464). A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 20 cardiovascular RCTs corroborated the blood-pressure effect above and additionally found taurine improved ejection fraction and NYHA class in heart-failure subgroups (Tzang 2024, PMID: 39148075). Trial doses in this use run considerably higher than the general range, around 3–6 g/day. This is genuine signal — but it belongs alongside a cardiologist's prescribed therapy, coordinated with a doctor, not as a self-directed substitute.

The 2023 "reverses aging" headlines: what the study actually showed

Most of taurine's recent publicity traces to one 2023 Science paper, which showed that taurine levels decline with age across several species and that supplementation extended healthspan (and, in some analyses, lifespan) in mice, plus improved health markers in middle-aged monkeys (Singh 2023, PMID: 37289866). That's careful, genuinely impressive animal science — but the human portion of that paper was only associational (declining blood taurine correlated with age in cross-sectional data), not a controlled trial showing supplementation does anything to human aging. In 2025, a study of 137 men aged 20 to 93 measured blood taurine directly and found no association with age, muscle mass, strength, or physical performance — a direct challenge to the premise that taurine tracks or drives aging in people (Marcangeli 2025, PMID: 41061678). Mice and monkeys are not a substitute for a human trial, and none has been done. If you're taking taurine, take it for blood pressure or exercise, not because of the 2023 headlines. Conditionally essential: why this matters more for vegans

Taurine is described as conditionally essential: your body can synthesize some from the amino acid cysteine, but that internal production is limited, and dietary taurine — concentrated in shellfish, dark poultry meat, and fish — helps fill the gap and supports normal bile-acid conjugation, cell hydration, and cardiovascular and muscle function (Xu 2008, PMID: 19343117). Plant foods contain essentially none of it. A study that directly measured vegans found lower plasma and urinary taurine levels than omnivores eating a comparable diet (Laidlaw 1988, PMID: 3354491). That doesn't mean every vegan is deficient — the body still makes some on its own — but it's a reasonable, low-risk group to consider a supplement, and the good news is that essentially all synthetic taurine sold as a supplement is already vegan, regardless of the ingredient's meaty reputation.

Energy drinks: a real dose, wrong reason to take it

A 250 mL energy drink typically contains about 1 g of taurine — a genuine, supplement-sized amount, well within the 1–6 g range used in the trials above. But it isn't why you feel the drink's effects: isolated-ingredient studies attribute the alertness and reaction-time boost to the caffeine, not the taurine.
