What spirulina is (and what actually varies between bottles)

Spirulina is the dried biomass of a cultivated blue-green cyanobacterium, Arthrospira platensis (Karkos 2011). It's sold as a whole food — roughly 60–70% protein, plus the blue pigment phycocyanin — not as a standardized extract of one molecule. That single fact changes what "quality" means: there's no ginsenoside-style active percentage to chase. All ten products we track are the same organism. Lipids: a 2023 meta-analysis found spirulina lowered LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides (SMD around −0.6) and raised HDL (Rahnama 2023). Blood pressure: a 2025 review put the drop at about −4.4 mmHg systolic and −2.8 mmHg diastolic (Shiri 2025). Fasting glucose: down about 18 mg/dL, with HbA1c not significantly changed (Hatami 2021). Allergic rhinitis: improved at 2 g/day in a single-center trial (Cingi 2008).
