The short answer

The "blue-green algae toxin" scare is about the wrong algae. Cultivated spirulina (Arthrospira) tested microcystin-free; the toxin risk is wild AFA (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae), harvested from open lakes, which tested positive up to 5.2 µg/g (Vichi 2012; Heussner 2012). So for spirulina the real question is cultivation source + heavy-metal testing — and of 10 products we track, 5 disclose neither a specific source nor a named test. "Third-party tested" with no named lab isn't a verifiable claim.

AFA vs Arthrospira: the distinction the scare gets wrong

Almost every "is spirulina toxic?" worry traces to a real fact about a different organism. Two blue-green algae get sold as supplements:

When researchers screened algal supplements, only AFA tested positive for microcystin; cultivated spirulina and chlorella were negative (Heussner 2012), and a separate analysis put AFA contamination as high as 5.2 µg/g while spirulina stayed clean (Vichi 2012). The reason is structural: AFA is scooped from open natural lakes where toxin-producing cyanobacteria bloom alongside it, whereas spirulina is grown in controlled cultivation. For context on why any of this is regulated, Oregon caps microcystin in blue-green algae products at 1 µg/g, and the WHO's tolerable daily intake for microcystin-LR is 0.04 µg/kg/day (both institutional standards, not clinical trials). So a wild-AFA product at 5.2 µg/g is the concern — not your cultivated spirulina.

The real axis 1: do you know where it was grown?

Because spirulina's safety rides on controlled cultivation, the first honest question is whether the label names a specific growing source. Some do — a named region and facility — and some say nothing at all. Naming a controlled source (Kona ponds in Hawaii, a named Parry facility in India, a stated California site) is a verifiable signal; "USDA organic" alone is not, because organic governs how it was farmed, not what heavy metals a batch carries. Of 10 products, only 5 name a controlled cultivation source.

The real axis 2: was it tested for heavy metals?

The second axis is contaminant testing — and here honesty requires a caveat. For lead, arsenic and cadmium, the trio that matters most, there is no clean peer-reviewed dataset across brands. One older analysis found mercury within limits, but its panel excluded lead, arsenic and cadmium (Al-Dhabi 2013), so it can't speak to those three. For the trio, the references are consumer-testing programs — ConsumerLab and California Proposition 65 warnings — not journal evidence. That's a real limitation, and we state it rather than dress a consumer test up as a clinical finding. The practical takeaway is disclosure: a product that discloses a named heavy-metal or microcystin test is verifiable; one that doesn't isn't.

Because a heavy daily scoop of spirulina also means a heavier dose of anything it carries, the difference between a named test and a vague one is the difference between a claim you can verify and one you can't. The transparency standouts

Two products go beyond the vague pattern and disclose an actual test — the clean end of the axis:

Blue spirulina isn't whole spirulina

One more label trap, separate from safety: "blue spirulina" is phycocyanin — the isolated blue pigment, sold mostly as a natural food coloring — not the whole dried biomass. The clinical evidence on lipids, blood pressure and glucose used whole spirulina, so a phycocyanin pigment product is a different product class and shouldn't be compared head-to-head with a whole-spirulina supplement, or assumed to carry the same evidence.
