The studied answer

The clinical dose depends on your goal, using an extract standardized to ~3% rosavins / 1% salidroside: 200–400 mg/day for stress and fatigue, over 600 mg/day for endurance, 340–680 mg/day for mood. Take it morning or midday — it's stimulating, so late-day doses cause insomnia. The catch isn't the milligrams: capsules run 100–1000 mg, so rosavin content, not extract weight, is what you're actually buying.

Almost all the human evidence uses an extract standardized to ~3% rosavins / 1% salidroside (the SHR-5 type). Here's what the trials used, honestly graded:

"Studied dose" is what trials used, not a personal recommendation. The overall fatigue literature is mixed — one review found rhodiola positive in only 2 of 6 physical-fatigue and 3 of 5 mental-fatigue trials, with high risk of bias (Ishaque 2012). Don't expect it to work for longevity, fat loss, testosterone, or anything cardiovascular — there's no trial support for those.

Timing: why rhodiola is a morning supplement

  • Take it in the morning or at midday, on an empty stomach. Rhodiola is mildly stimulating; late-day doses commonly cause jitteriness and insomnia.
  • Splitting a higher dose? Take the first dose on waking and the second before lunch — not after mid-afternoon.
  • It's the opposite of a bedtime supplement. If you want something for sleep, rhodiola is the wrong tool.

One serving ≠ the same milligrams — and milligrams aren't the real number

Rhodiola capsules on the market range from 100 mg to 1000 mg of extract, so "one serving" means wildly different things by brand. A Thorne or Pure Encapsulations serving is 100 mg; a NOW or Nootropics Depot serving is 500 mg; Bronson is a 1,000 mg root powder. Reading the dose alone tells you almost nothing.

The honest caveat: rosavin content — not extract weight — is what matters. Rosavins are the Rhodiola rosea species fingerprint (nearly unique to the plant), so the studied extracts are standardized to ~3% rosavins / 1% salidroside (~3:1). Salidroside alone isn't enough: it also occurs in the cheaper look-alike R. crenulata, so a "high-salidroside, no-rosavin" product may be the wrong species entirely. Surveys found mislabeling and species substitution are common — ~20% of R. rosea products had no rosavin and most of the rest were lower-potency or adulterated (Booker 2016), and ~60% of a broader Rhodiola sample was not the labeled species (Xin 2015). So a 500 mg extract that never discloses rosavin % can deliver less of what was studied than a disclosed 100 mg 3%-rosavin extract. See is your rhodiola real?
