Best Whey Protein Powder (2026)
The best whey protein powder for most people is Naked Whey: one ingredient, $1.84 per 25 g of protein, on the Informed Choice testing list. Of the 22 whey powders we price, isolates cost a median $2.13 per 25 g of protein, against $1.95 for concentrates and blends. Prices overlap, so compare the tubs.

Why we pick it It is plain whey. Nothing is added, not a sweetener, a flavor or a color, and the brand says the whey comes from grass-fed cows. Informed Choice checks samples bought in stores for drugs banned in sport. With no flavor of its own, it mixes into a smoothie, oatmeal or coffee.
What you give up There is no flavor, and a concentrate keeps a little lactose. BulkSupplements isolate costs 6% less and is on NSF Certified for Sport, but it adds lecithin. For flavor, see Gold Standard.
The best whey protein powder for your needs
Naked Whey suits most people. If one of these matters more to you, buy it instead. Each is on a testing list, and the cost is for 25 g of protein, so tubs of different sizes compare fairly.
Lower cost, with flavor: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard
This is a blend: its label lists whey isolate, whey concentrate and hydrolyzed whey. It costs 19% less per 25 g than Naked Whey, the lowest of the 17 powders here on a testing list. It is flavored (we price Double Rich Chocolate), sweetened with ace-K, and on Informed Choice. We still pick Naked Whey first because it has no sweetener or flavor. In Consumer Reports’ 2025 lead test of 23 protein powders and shakes, only 4 had less lead.

Lowest-cost unflavored isolate: BulkSupplements Whey Protein Isolate
An isolate is filtered further to remove most of the lactose. This one is unflavored, and its label lists only whey isolate and sunflower lecithin, which helps it mix. It is on NSF Certified for Sport, which checks the label and tests for banned drugs. It costs 6% less per 25 g than Naked Whey, the lowest of the unflavored isolates on a testing list. Myprotein Impact Whey Isolate costs less ($1.69) but is flavored and uses 4 sweeteners. More in the best whey isolate.

Flavored, no artificial sweetener: Transparent Labs Whey Isolate
It is a grass-fed isolate sweetened with stevia, and it is on NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Choice. The brand’s own test of one batch (lot 26080570, French Vanilla, the tub we link) found 0.17 mcg of lead per 34.3 g scoop. Of the 19 taste tests we counted, 3 named this powder best tasting, the most of any powder, two of them for its Milk Chocolate flavor. See the best tasting protein powder. It costs 5% more per 25 g than Naked Whey.

Hydrolyzed isolate: Dymatize ISO100
Hydrolyzed isolate is whey that is filtered and then partly broken down. Dymatize’s Amazon listing says this speeds digestion, but we have not seen proof that it sits better than a plain isolate. Men’s Health and WIRED both named it their best tasting protein powder. It is flavored (we price Gourmet Vanilla), uses sucralose and stevia, and is on Informed Choice. It costs 15% more per 25 g than Naked Whey.

Concentrate, blend or isolate: which whey should you buy?
Pick by lactose and label, then compare cost. Isolates have less lactose and cost about 9% more per 25 g at the median, or 18 cents, but the ranges overlap.
| Kind of whey | Cost per 25 g | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Concentrate1 powder | $1.84 | Least filtered. Keeps some lactose and fat. |
| Blend5 powders | $2.07 median$1.49 to $2.72 | Concentrate mixed with isolate. |
| Isolate14 powders | $2.13 median$1.69 to $4.03 | Filtered more. Most lactose and fat removed. |
| Hydrolyzed isolate2 powders | $2.08 median$2.05 to $2.12 | Isolate, partly broken down. |
Filtering matters less for protein than the labels suggest. Naked Whey, a concentrate, is 83% protein by weight, the same as BulkSupplements, an isolate (83%). The flavored two are lower: Gold Standard 79% and ISO100 78%. Compare grams of protein a serving, not the word “isolate” on the tub.
Is whey protein powder safe?
Whey is milk protein, a common food. How much lead you get depends on the brand, and for most of these powders no number is published. Three things to know.
Lead
Whey tests lower in lead than plant powders. A 2025 Clean Label Project study of 160 powders found 28% of whey powders over California’s Prop 65 lead level, against 77% of plant powders. Consumer Reports tested two whey tubs by name: Gold Standard at 56% of the daily lead limit Consumer Reports uses (it said 1 to 2 servings a day is fine) and Momentous Whey Protein Isolate at 30% (3 servings a day). It did not test Naked Whey. Some brands also post a lab report for each batch, and the table shows those numbers for the flavor we link. We found a lead number for 3 of the 22 powders. A missing number is not a bad one.
Milk allergy
Whey is milk protein. If you have a milk allergy, skip all whey; see the best plant-based protein powder.
Kidneys
If you have kidney disease, ask your doctor before adding protein powder.
Which whey is best if you are sensitive to lactose?
Start with an isolate, such as BulkSupplements Whey Protein Isolate, because it is filtered to remove most of the lactose. Isolates still hold a little lactose, so they are not lactose-free. If one still bothers you, try a plant powder. See the best whey isolate and the best lactose-free protein powder.
Is grass-fed whey worth the extra cost?
It is worth it if you care how the cows were fed, and it will not change the protein on the label. Grass-fed is the brand’s claim, not a test result. Naked Whey, the grass-fed pick here, has 25 g of protein a serving against 24 g for Gold Standard. See the best grass-fed whey isolate.
Flavored or unflavored whey?
Pick unflavored if you mix whey into food, and flavored if you drink it plain. The unflavored picks here, Naked Whey and BulkSupplements, list no sweetener. Gold Standard uses ace-K, and ISO100 uses sucralose and stevia. 11 of the 22 use sucralose or ace-K, so check the table if you avoid them. See the best unflavored whey.
How much whey protein should you take a day?
One or two scoops is plenty for most people, which is 25 to 50 g of protein. Powder fills gaps; most of your protein should still come from food. For people lifting weights, muscle gains stopped rising above about 1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight a day, counting food (Morton 2018). Work out your own number.

Questions people ask
Is whey isolate worth more than concentrate?
Usually only if lactose bothers you. At the median an isolate costs 18 cents more per 25 g of protein, but these are different brands, not one powder filtered more. 3 isolates cost less than Naked Whey, our concentrate pick.
Is whey or plant protein better?
Animal protein has a small edge for muscle mass over most plant proteins. A 2025 review of randomized trials found no difference in strength, but plant protein gave slightly less muscle mass than animal protein. Soy matched milk protein; other plant proteins did not (Reid-McCann 2025). Plant powders also tend to carry more lead. If you avoid milk, see the best plant-based protein powder.
Is a ready-to-drink whey shake better than powder?
A bottle is easier, not better. Powder costs less per gram of protein and lets you pick the scoop. See the best protein shakes for bottles.
How we picked
We priced all 22 whey powders in our catalog on Amazon on November 6, 2026, one tub per product, and read each label for the flavor we link to set its kind. A label that lists isolate and concentrate together counts as a blend. We left out powders that mix in other proteins, such as Muscle Milk and Garden of Life Sport Whey, and ready-to-drink shakes. The medians compare 14 isolates with 6 concentrates and blends; hydrolyzed isolates are separate. Testing lists were checked August 25, 2026 to September 22, 2026. For the other picks, see the best protein powder, or compare two common tubs in Optimum Nutrition vs Dymatize ISO100.
