Why we pick it It is the only powder here with one ingredient. That matters most in an unflavored powder, because you taste it in coffee, oats or a smoothie. It is our pick for the best protein powder overall, and Informed Choice lists it.

What you give up It is a concentrate, so it has more lactose than an isolate. BulkSupplements Whey Isolate costs about 15% less per 25 g, has less lactose and is on a stricter list, but it adds sunflower lecithin. Naked is the only one here with a single ingredient, which you taste in coffee or oats. See the other picks below.

The best unflavored whey for your needs

Naked Whey suits most people. If one of these matters more to you, buy the one made for it. Both are on NSF Certified for Sport.

Lactose bothers you: BulkSupplements Whey Isolate

BulkSupplements Whey Isolate is filtered further, so it has less lactose than a concentrate. Its only other ingredient is sunflower lecithin, which helps it mix. It is on NSF Certified for Sport, which also checks the label, and costs about 15% less than Naked per 25 g of protein.

Momentous is grass-fed whey isolate with added digestive enzymes. NSF Certified for Sport lists the unflavored tub (listing 1518123). A scoop has 20 g of protein and 90 calories. It costs about 90% more than Naked per 25 g of protein.

How to choose an unflavored whey

Read the ingredient list

"Unflavored" means no added flavor. Some unflavored powders still add sweeteners, gums or lecithin. If you want plain whey, look for one ingredient.

Pick isolate if lactose bothers you

Isolate is filtered further than concentrate. It is typically 0.5 to 1% lactose, against 4 to 8% for an 80% protein concentrate like Naked Whey (U.S. Dairy Export Council spec sheets). It is still milk, so it is not safe with a milk allergy.

Buy one on a testing list

A testing list checks the tub. Informed Choice and NSF Certified for Sport both screen for drugs banned in sport. See which protein powders are third-party tested.
