Testing: Carlson is on IFOS; Nordic posts its own reports
- Carlson: IFOS. IFOS, run by the testing firm Nutrasource, tests each lot a brand enrolls for the EPA and DHA amount against the label, freshness and contaminants such as PCBs, dioxins and heavy metals. When we read Carlson’s listing on October 9, 2026, it held one lot report. That is a thin record: Sports Research’s listing holds over 100. It is still one more outside check than Nordic has. See the listing.
- Nordic Naturals: its own reports. Nordic’s site says its products are third-party tested and offers a Certificate of Analysis for any product. Those are reports Nordic chooses to post. We found Ultimate Omega on none of the six public lists we search.
What the testing list shows
How we checked this
We searched each program’s own list for both products on September 29, 2026 and re-read the IFOS listing on October 9, 2026, counting the lots in its report picker. The lists: NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, Informed Choice, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified and IFOS. Our score also counts FDA recalls: Nordic Naturals had one in 2025, for mislabeled Zero Sugar Kids Multivitamin Gummies, not a fish oil (openFDA). Carlson had none in 24 months.
Per serving: two softgels each
Both labels make a serving two softgels. Carlson’s gives 1,400 mg of EPA+DHA; Nordic’s gives 1,100 mg. Both are triglyceride form, the form omega-3 takes in fish, so the form is not a reason to pick one.
| Per serving | Carlson | Nordic Naturals |

Questions
Is Carlson fish oil third party tested?
Yes. IFOS lists Carlson Elite Omega-3 Gems (listing CRLL0014). When we read it on October 9, 2026 it held one lot report. IFOS checks the EPA and DHA amount against the label, freshness and contaminants such as PCBs, dioxins and heavy metals. Carlson is on none of the other lists we search.
Is Nordic Naturals third party tested?
Nordic says so: its site says its products are third-party tested and that a Certificate of Analysis is available for any product. Those are reports Nordic posts itself. We did not find Ultimate Omega on any public testing list we search (NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, Informed Choice, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified and IFOS; searched September 29, 2026).
Which has more omega-3?
Carlson. Two Carlson softgels give 1,400 mg of EPA+DHA (1,600 mg of all omega-3s). Two Nordic soft gels give 1,100 mg (1,280 mg of all omega-3s).
Why does Nordic Naturals cost more?
At list price, Ultimate Omega costs $0.77 per 1,000 mg of EPA+DHA and Carlson $0.55. Nordic’s bottle holds more softgels, but each serving has less omega-3. The extra money buys flavor choices, not a public testing list.
How much omega-3 should I take a day?
Studies of fish oil used about 500 to 4,000 mg of EPA+DHA a day. Two Carlson softgels give 1,400 mg. Talk to your doctor before taking more than about 3,000 mg a day or if you take a blood thinner. Our omega-3 dosage guide covers the numbers.
