Nordic Naturals vs Sports Research Omega-3 (2026): Which to Buy

By Erin Rose Updated October 8, 2026 Methodology

Buy Sports Research Triple Strength. It costs $0.35 per 1,000 mg of EPA+DHA at list price, against $0.77 for Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, and it is on IFOS, a testing list that posts a lab report for each lot. Nordic is on no public list. Both are triglyceride form, so absorption is not a reason to pay more.

What the testing list shows

Sports Research on IFOS

IFOS listing for Sports Research Omega-3 Fish Oil Triple Strength 1250mg: TG omega-3, 690 mg EPA and 310 mg DHA, with a batch report picker
IFOS lists 310 mg of DHA; the Sports Research label we score says 260 mg, so we use the lower figure. We searched IFOS, NSF, Informed and USP for Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega on September 29, 2026 and found no listing. Screenshots taken October 8, 2026; click an image to open the live page.
How we checked this

We searched each program’s own list for both products on September 29, 2026 and re-read the IFOS listing on October 8, 2026. The lists: NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, Informed Choice, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified, IFOS. Our score also counts FDA recalls: Nordic Naturals had one in 2025, for mislabeled Zero Sugar Kids Multivitamin Gummies, not a fish oil (openFDA). Sports Research had none in 24 months.

Per serving: one softgel against two

Sports Research puts 950 mg of EPA+DHA in one softgel. Nordic gives 1,100 mg in two. That is 150 mg more per serving from Nordic, for $0.51 more at list price. Both are triglyceride form, the form omega-3 takes in fish.

EPA and DHA from each brand’s label (Sports Research: the Amazon Supplement Facts we score; Nordic: its label, 2 soft gels). These are the brands’ own figures; we did not lab-test them.

Questions

Is Nordic Naturals third party tested?

Nordic says so: its site says its products are third-party tested and that a Certificate of Analysis is available for any product. Those are reports Nordic posts itself. We did not find Ultimate Omega on any public testing list we search (NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, Informed Choice, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified, IFOS; searched September 29, 2026).

Is Sports Research omega-3 IFOS certified?

Yes. IFOS lists Sports Research Omega-3 Fish Oil Triple Strength 1250mg (listing SPRT0048) and posts a lab report for each lot it tested: 144 lots on October 8, 2026. IFOS checks the EPA and DHA amount against the label, freshness and contaminants such as PCBs, dioxins and heavy metals. Match the lot number on your bottle to the list.

Are both triglyceride form?

Yes. IFOS describes Sports Research Triple Strength as TG (triglyceride) omega-3. Nordic says its fish oils are rTG and TG form. So the form is not a reason to pick one over the other here.

Why does Nordic Naturals cost more?

At list price, Ultimate Omega costs $0.77 per 1,000 mg of EPA+DHA, about 2.2 times Sports Research ($0.35). Nordic gives a bit more omega-3 per serving (1,100 mg in 2 soft gels against 950 mg in 1), but not enough to close that gap. The extra money buys flavor choices and a little more omega-3 per serving, not a public testing list.

How much omega-3 should I take a day?

Studies of fish oil used about 500 to 4,000 mg of EPA+DHA a day, and we count a serving in that range as a full dose. One Sports Research softgel gives 950 mg. Talk to your doctor before taking more than about 3,000 mg a day or if you take a blood thinner. Our omega-3 dosage guide covers the numbers.
