NOW vs Konsyl Psyllium (2026): Same Husk, Different Scoop
Both are plain psyllium husk, nothing added. NOW’s tablespoon carries 7 g of fiber (6 g soluble), Konsyl’s teaspoon 5 g (3 g soluble), so a full 7 g dose is one NOW scoop or two of Konsyl. Per 7 g of fiber, NOW Foods is 36% cheaper ($0.30 vs $0.40) at current Amazon prices. Konsyl’s tub simply lasts longer at its smaller scoop.

The real difference: the scoop, not the husk
Psyllium earns its place on the strength of two things other fibers lack. It forms a viscous gel that stays intact through the colon, which is why it softens hard stool and firms loose stool where wheat bran and finely milled fibers do neither (McRorie 2017, PMID 27863994), and in the 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of fiber supplements for chronic constipation it was the best-supported option for stool frequency and consistency (van der Schoot 2022, PMID 35816465). The same gel binds bile acids, which is the basis of the FDA’s authorized health claim at 7 g of soluble fiber a day. None of that depends on the brand: both tubs are the husk and nothing else.
The difference is what a serving means. NOW’s tablespoon is 7 g of fiber, so one serving is a working dose; Konsyl’s teaspoon is 5 g, so the label dose is a gentler start and two servings make the 7 g claim level. Normalized to 7 g of fiber, NOW Foods is 36% cheaper today. Konsyl’s 90-serving tub looks like the better deal on the shelf only because the scoop is smaller.
Who each one is for
Choose NOW if you want a full dose in one scoop, prefer certified-organic husk, or it is the cheaper tub per gram the day you order.
Choose Konsyl if you are starting psyllium and want a smaller first dose, prefer a teaspoon measure, or it is the cheaper tub per gram the day you order.
Skip both if psyllium bloats you badly even after a slow ramp: a less fermentable fiber such as methylcellulose is the usual next step, and our fiber ranking covers it.

What the published reviews of Fiber concluded
- The Effect of Fiber Supplementation on Chronic Constipation in Adults: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials. · The American journal of clinical nutrition, 2022
“Fiber supplementation is effective at improving constipation. Particularly, psyllium, doses >10 g/d and treatment durations of at least 4 weeks appear optimal, though caution is needed when interpreting the results due to considerable heterogeneity.”
- The Effects of Concurrent Aerobic and Strength Training on Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. · Sports medicine (Auckland, N.Z.), 2022
“In contrast to previous findings on whole muscle hypertrophy, the present results suggest that concurrent aerobic and strength training may have a small negative effect on fiber hypertrophy compared with strength training alone.”
- Dietary fiber intake and all-cause and cause-specific mortality: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies. · Clinical nutrition (Edinburgh, Scotland), 2024
“This comprehensive meta-analysis provides additional evidence supporting the protective association between fiber intake and all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates.”
- Evaluation of fiber posts vs metal posts for restoring severely damaged endodontically treated teeth: a systematic review and meta-analysis. · Quintessence international (Berlin, Germany : 1985), 2019
“It was concluded that fiber posts displayed higher medium-term (3 to 7 years) overall survival rates than did metal posts when used in the restoration of endodontically treated teeth with no more than two coronal walls remaining.”
Method: PubMed searched in humans for systematic reviews and meta-analyses with Fiber in the title; these 4 of the 41 that qualified are shown with the authors’ own conclusion quoted rather than summarised. What it cannot tell you: whether Fiber will work for you — each of these reports an average across trials published 2019–2024, and null findings are shown here as readily as positive ones.
Frequently asked questions
Is NOW or Konsyl psyllium better?
Both are single-ingredient psyllium husk powder with no sweetener or flavor, so the husk itself is the same product. The labels differ in the scoop: NOW directs 1 tbsp (9 g) carrying 7 g of fiber (6 g soluble); Konsyl directs 1 tsp (6 g) carrying 5 g (3 g soluble). Per 7 g of fiber, the trial and label-claim dose, NOW Foods is 36% cheaper at current Amazon prices ($0.30 vs $0.40). Konsyl's tub holds more servings; NOW's serving is closer to a full dose.
How much psyllium should I take a day?
The FDA heart-health claim for psyllium requires 7 g of soluble fiber a day, which is roughly 10 g of psyllium husk, and the constipation trials mostly used 10 to 20 g a day in divided doses. That is 1 NOW serving or 2 Konsyl servings for 7 g of fiber. Start with one serving a day in a full glass of water and add a second after a week if you need it; psyllium without enough water is how people end up bloated or worse.
Does psyllium work for constipation?
Better than most fibers. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of fiber supplementation in chronic constipation found psyllium the best-supported supplement, improving stool frequency and consistency, and the physical explanation is that psyllium forms a gel that holds water through the whole colon where wheat bran and finely ground fibers do not (McRorie 2017). It is also the fiber with the cholesterol claim.
Is Konsyl the same as Metamucil?
Same active ingredient. Metamucil's classic powders add sweetener, flavor and orange color, and the sugar-free versions use aspartame or sucralose; Konsyl and NOW are the husk alone. If you dislike the taste of plain psyllium, Metamucil is the flavored route; if you want nothing but fiber, either product on this page.
Powder or capsules?
Powder. A psyllium capsule holds about 0.5 g, so a 7 g dose is 14 capsules; the powders here deliver it in one or two scoops. Capsules make sense only for travel.
