How much sodium a powder should carry: the sweat arithmetic
Sweat is mostly water and sodium chloride, and both the rate and the concentration vary widely between people. The largest normative dataset, 506 athletes across team and endurance sports in conditions from cool to hot, put predicted whole-body sweat sodium at a mean of 35.9 mmol per litre with a range of 18.2 to 70.8, and whole-body sweating rate at a mean of 1.21 litres an hour (Baker 2016, PMID 26070030). In milligrams that is 825 mg of sodium per litre, 418 for a light sweater and 1,628 for a salty one, and about 1,000 mg lost in an average hard hour. Sweat-testing methods vary enough that any individual figure carries error (Baker 2017, PMID 28332116), which is why the practical target is a range, 500 to 1,000 mg of sodium per hour of heavy sweating, rather than a number.
Potassium is the other electrolyte on every label and the one the body loses least: sweat potassium runs a small fraction of sodium, and the diet supplies grams of it a day. A powder that carries more potassium than sodium is formulated for taste and marketing, not for sweat. Magnesium losses in sweat are smaller still. The sports-medicine position statement of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dietitians of Canada and the American College of Sports Medicine recommends carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks for prolonged or intense exercise, heavy sweating and heat, and plain water for everything shorter (Thomas 2016, PMID 26891166). For illness, the reference is the WHO reduced-osmolarity oral rehydration solution, sodium paired with glucose, which cut the need for intravenous fluids against the older formula (Hahn 2002, PMID 11869639); the glucose-paired powders on this page are built on that principle.
We read 184 electrolyte powder labels: the shelf is a pinch of salt
Original researchEvery electrolyte or hydration powder label we could enumerate in the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database on 2026-09-18: 245 powder labels with a sodium or potassium row retrieved, of which 184 are sold as electrolyte or hydration products (61 protein, pre-workout, greens and amino powders that happen to list sodium are excluded), from 62 brands; 816 electrolyte labels of any form are on the market. Sodium is declared on 98.9% of them.
The median serving delivers 180 mg of sodium; a quarter of labels deliver 101 mg or less and three quarters 270 mg or less. 75.8% of labels sit under 300 mg, 6.6% reach 500 mg, and not one reaches the 1,000 mg an hour of hard sweat removes. The most sodium on any label we read was 939 mg. The two highest-sodium sticks in our catalog, LMNT Recharge Electrolytes and Redmond Re-Lyte Hydration, do not appear in the database at all: the brands built for sweat replacement have not filed a label with the NIH, and the shelf that has is the daily-wellness shelf.

The shelf is inverted. Potassium is declared on 97.3% of labels at a median 250 mg, above the median sodium, and 55.4% of labels carry more potassium than sodium, the reverse of sweat. Magnesium is on 91.3% at a median 100 mg. Sugar-wise, 41.8% of labels claim sugar-free or declare zero; among the 55.4% that declare a sugars row the median serving carries 2 g, so the glucose-paired oral-rehydration style is a minority of the shelf.
How we read the labels, and what did not hold
Method: 245 labels retrieved from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database on 2026-09-18 by paging its ranked search for electrolyte and hydration powder terms and keeping only labels whose filed physical state is Powder, whose panel carries a sodium or potassium row, and whose product name says electrolyte or hydration; 184 were analysed. Sodium, potassium and magnesium are the Supplement Facts rows for the panel’s serving (one packet, scoop or stick), never a compound weight. Every figure was recomputed in two halves of the corpus split by label-id parity: 17 of 19 checks agreed within tolerance and only those are printed. Not printed (2): share at least 10 g sugars per serving; median calories per serving. The highest single serving is an observed extreme, not a validated statistic. The census and the cost table are published as open data at /electrolytes/powder.json (CC BY 4.0). What it cannot tell you: how many tubs each brand sells, whether the powder matches its label, or anything about brands that have not filed with the NIH, which includes the two highest-sodium sticks we track.

Who needs an electrolyte powder, and who is buying salt water
Buy one if you sweat hard for an hour or more, train or work in heat, are on a ketogenic or fasting diet (lower insulin makes the kidneys shed sodium, as the dosage guide lays out), or are recovering from vomiting or diarrhoea, where the glucose-paired formula is the one to reach for. Dose it to the hour: 500 to 1,000 mg of sodium per hour of heavy sweating, and water to thirst.
Do not buy one to drink at a desk. The median powder on the NIH shelf delivers 180 mg of sodium, a pinch of salt at a premium price, and the high-sodium sticks add a real dose of sodium to a diet that public-health trials say is already high: a Cochrane meta-analysis found modest salt reduction lowers blood pressure (He 2013, PMID 23558162), while a large cohort found the lowest cardiovascular risk in the middle of the intake range rather than at the bottom (O’Donnell 2014, PMID 25119607). Either way, a sedentary day needs no stick. And do not buy a powder for its potassium: the diet supplies grams, sweat loses little, and a label with more potassium than sodium is telling you it was not formulated for sweat.
Safety, briefly
The acute danger in endurance sport is the opposite of what the shelf sells: exercise-associated hyponatraemia from overdrinking plain water. In a Boston Marathon study, 13% of finishers had low blood sodium and drinking more than three litres during the race was the strongest risk factor (Almond 2005, PMID 15829535); the consensus statement on the condition puts drinking to thirst first and sodium second (Hew-Butler 2015, PMID 26102445). The chronic risk runs the other way: a high-sodium stick every day on a normal diet is a blood-pressure decision, and people with hypertension, heart failure or kidney disease should ask before adding one. Potassium in the hundreds of milligrams is safe for healthy kidneys and not for anyone on potassium-sparing diuretics or ACE inhibitors without advice. Sugar-free sticks use stevia or allulose; the glucose-paired ones carry a real sugar dose, which is the point of them and a reason not to drink them daily.

Can you take too much electrolyte powder?
Yes, in two directions. Too much sodium on top of a normal diet pushes blood pressure up over time and matters most for people with hypertension or kidney disease; a high-sodium stick is a dose, not a flavouring. Too much plain water without sodium is the acute danger in endurance events: in one Boston Marathon study 13% of finishers had low blood sodium, and drinking more than three litres during the race was the top risk factor. Potassium is the other limit; a powder with several hundred milligrams is fine for healthy kidneys and not for someone on potassium-sparing drugs.
