By Erin Rose Updated October 5, 2026 Methodology

Buy Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (the plain tub). Same 20 g of collagen a serving as Orgain, and two NSF testing programs list it. Orgain is on none. On Amazon it costs about 18 cents more a serving.

Is it the same collagen?

Almost. Both are unflavored collagen peptides from cows, with nothing else in the tub. A 20 g serving gives 18 g of protein and 70 calories on both labels. The main amino acids in collagen differ by less than 18%.

Per 20 g serving, from each label. These are the brands’ own figures; we did not lab-test them.

Neither uses a branded peptide like Verisol or Fortigel, and no study compares these two brands. So at the same dose, we don’t expect one to work better. The research is on collagen peptides in general: a 2023 review of 26 trials found that hydrolyzed collagen improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with a placebo (Pu 2023). What differs is testing and price.

Who checks each tub

Two NSF programs list plain Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. We found Orgain’s collagen on none of the five lists we searched.

Same NSF/ANSI 173 search, two brands

Vital Proteins: collagen listed

NSF/ANSI 173 listing for Nestlé Healthcare Nutrition, Inc. DBA Vital Proteins, with the plain Collagen Peptides row highlighted at 20 g (4 Tbsp)

Orgain: no products found

Vital Proteins’ plain Collagen Peptides is on the list (we cropped the listing to the rows that matter and highlighted it). A search for Orgain finds nothing. Screenshots taken October 5, 2026; click an image to open the live page.

The 14.3 oz tub on NSF Certified for Sport

Listing 1792557

NSF Certified for Sport listing: Collagen Peptides, Vital Proteins LLC, all lots, unflavored, package sizes including 405 g, serving 20 g (4 tbsp)
Look for 405 g in the package sizes: that is the 14.3 oz tub our button goes to. Screenshots taken October 5, 2026; click an image to open the live page.

Testing matters most if you get drug-tested for sport or work. For everyone else, it shows the company lets an outside lab check its work. It does not mean the collagen works better.

How we checked this

We searched each program’s own list for both brands on October 5, 2026. “Listed” means we found this product and flavor on the program’s list; for NSF Certified for Sport we also matched the tub size.

Each cell is a search of the program’s own list.

What the labels say

Both Supplement Facts panels list one ingredient and 20 g of collagen. Vital Proteins measures it as 4 tablespoons; Orgain as 2 scoops.

Supplement Facts panel from the Vital Proteins label: 4 tbsp (20 g) serving.
Vital Proteins · We link the 14.3 oz tub (about 20 servings); this label is from a larger tub (about 28 servings) The label NSF has on file for listing 1792557. Same 4 tbsp (20 g) serving and the same figures as the 14.3 oz tub's label on Amazon.
Supplement Facts panel from the Orgain label: 20 g serving.
Orgain · 454 g (1 lb), about 22 servings of 2 scoops Label on file with NIH DSLD 310258, entered December 21, 2024. This is the label for the 1 lb tub, the one we link.

How big is the price gap?

Vital Proteins costs about 19% more, or 18 cents more per 20 g serving. On Amazon (October 5, 2026), Vital Proteins’ 14.3 oz tub is $22.86 for 20 servings, or $1.14 per 20 g. Orgain’s 1 lb tub is $21.12 for 22 servings, or $0.96 per 20 g. At one serving a day, that is $5.49 more a month for the tested tub.

Amazon prices checked October 5, 2026. Both labels use a 20 g serving.
TubPriceServingsPer 20 g
Vital Proteins, 14.3 oz$22.8620$1.14
Orgain, 1 lb$21.1222$0.96
Vital Proteins Advanced, 20 oz$38.9927$1.44

Prices move. To check a tub you see somewhere else, divide its price by its servings.

Watch out: the 20 oz Vital Proteins tub is a different product

Search Amazon for Vital Proteins collagen and the first tub is often the 20 oz Collagen Peptides Advanced. Its label adds 120 mg of hyaluronic acid and 90 mg of vitamin C to the 20 g of collagen, in a 3-tablespoon serving. At $38.99 for about 27 servings, it costs $1.44 per 20 g, more than either tub above.

Neither NSF list names it. If you want the tested tub, pick the plain one with the cow on the label, not the one that says “Advanced.” Need vitamin C? A glass of orange juice covers it.

Questions

Is Orgain collagen as good as Vital Proteins?

What is inside is close to the same. Both labels list one ingredient, bovine collagen peptides, and give 20 g of collagen and 18 g of protein a serving. The difference is testing: two NSF programs list this Vital Proteins powder, and we found Orgain’s collagen on none of the five testing lists we checked. If you never get drug-tested and only want the lowest price, Orgain is fine.

Which is cheaper, Vital Proteins or Orgain collagen?

Orgain, by about 18 cents a serving. On Amazon (October 5, 2026), Orgain’s 1 lb tub is $21.12 for 22 servings, or $0.96 per 20 g. Vital Proteins’ 14.3 oz tub is $22.86 for 20 servings, or $1.14 per 20 g. Skip Vital Proteins’ 20 oz “Advanced” tub if price matters: it works out to $1.44 per 20 g.

Is Orgain collagen third-party tested?

Not on any public list we could find. On October 5, 2026 we searched NSF Certified for Sport, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified, Informed Sport and Informed Choice. Orgain’s only listing is its creatine, on Informed Choice. Orgain’s label says the collagen is non-GMO tested, which is not a purity or banned-substance test.

Is Vital Proteins collagen NSF certified?

Yes, the plain unflavored Collagen Peptides is. NSF Certified for Sport lists it (listing 1792557, sizes from 140 g to 680 g, including the 405 g or 14.3 oz tub). NSF/ANSI 173 also lists it, filed under Nestlé Healthcare Nutrition, Inc. DBA Vital Proteins, so search that name. The 20 oz “Advanced” formula is not on either list.

What is the difference between Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides and Collagen Peptides Advanced?

Advanced adds 120 mg of hyaluronic acid and 90 mg of vitamin C (100% of the Daily Value) to the same 20 g of collagen, in a 3-tablespoon serving. It costs more per serving, and neither NSF list names it. The plain tub has one ingredient and is the one NSF lists.
