The NIH Recommended Dietary Allowance ticks up exactly once with age — from 600 IU/day for adults 19-70 to 800 IU/day at 71 and older. That's a smaller jump than most people expect. It's the only official age adjustment that exists.

The practical maintenance dose clinicians more commonly recommend is 1,000-2,000 IU of D3 daily. That doesn't change with age at all — it applies the same way to a 35-year-old and a 75-year-old.

Why Absorption Changes With Age, Even Though the RDA Barely Does

The RDA number moves very little with age, but two things behind it change more. Skin synthesizes less vitamin D from sun exposure as you age. Your kidneys also convert less of that vitamin D into its active hormone form.
