Shilajit is scraped from mountain rock, so contamination is the real risk — not the benefits hype. The contamination problem is real, recent, and under-reported

Most shilajit content online is either benefits hype or brand reassurance. The genuinely useful, evidence-based story is the one almost nobody tells: what's actually in the resin besides the marketed actives.

  • ~65 possible metals, some over the limit. A 2024 review in Biological Trace Element Research catalogued the heavy-metal content of shilajit and concluded bluntly that "consumption without knowing permissible levels of metals is not safe." Shilajit's humic substances can actually bind some metals, which is part of its traditional appeal — but that doesn't neutralize the toxic ones present in a given batch (Hussain & Saeed 2024, PMID 38393486).
  • Thallium is the sleeper risk. A 2025 study in BMC Chemistry quantified thallium — a metal more toxic than mercury — in raw shilajit and in five commercial supplements. It found up to 0.226 µg/g in raw material and up to 0.5 µg/g in finished supplements. That some products tested higher than raw resin is the important part: processing and formulation can concentrate a contaminant rather than remove it (Kamgar 2025, PMID 39827344). Almost no consumer COA even tests for thallium.
  • Raw ≠ safe. "Wild, raw, authentic" reads like a purity signal but is the opposite: unpurified shilajit can carry mycotoxins, microbes and grit, which is why Ayurvedic tradition purifies it (shodhana) before use. The point of processing is safety — but as the thallium data shows, processing alone isn't proof of it.

The fulvic-acid % on the label is not what you think

Fulvic acid is shilajit's headline active, so brands compete on the percentage — and the numbers are all over the map, from 15% to 95%. Most sites either repeat the biggest number credulously or declare all high numbers fake. The honest answer is in the middle, and it comes down to how the fulvic acid was measured:

So a jar reading "15% fulvic acid" and a capsule reading "50%+" can both be honest — they're not measuring the same thing. What should make you skeptical isn't a high number; it's a high number with no test method named, or "fulvic acid" powder that turns out to be extracted from peat rather than genuine mountain shilajit (Kamgar 2025 composition review, PMID 38133965).

How to read a shilajit certificate of analysis (COA)

A COA is a lab report for a specific production batch. It's the single best purchase signal for shilajit — but only if it actually tests the right things. Here's the checklist:

  • Hemochromatosis or iron overload: shilajit contains iron and fulvic acid may enhance mineral absorption — a theoretical precaution, not documented harm, but worth avoiding.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: avoid — there's no human safety data.
  • On medication: no shilajit drug-interaction studies exist, so clear it with a clinician first.
