Melatonin Gummies: How Much Is in One, and How Much Works

By Erin Rose · Published · Reviewed against primary sources · Methodology · About Us

Not medical advice. This summarizes placebo-controlled trials, two published lab analyses of melatonin products, the labels manufacturers file with the NIH, and current Amazon prices. Melatonin for a child is a clinician’s decision.

Quick answer

The melatonin dose that works in trials is 0.5 to 3 mg, and the gummy shelf sells 5. On the 100 melatonin gummy labels filed with the NIH, the median directed serving is 5 mg and 64% deliver 5 mg or more; the median gummy carries 2.5 mg. A meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials put melatonin’s effect at about 7 minutes faster to sleep, and a 2024 dose-response analysis found the benefit plateaus around 4 mg. More is not more.

Buy the lowest dose that works, and buy a label that has been checked. In a JAMA analysis of 25 melatonin gummies, only 3 were within 10% of their label and one contained no melatonin. Nature's Truth Low Dose Melatonin 1 mg Gummies is the one adult gummy we track that sits inside the trial range at a single gummy, 1 mg for $0.16 a night; a 3 mg tablet does the same job for $0.04. The dose that works: small, and earlier than the label says

Melatonin is a timing signal, not a sedative. A meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials in primary sleep disorders found it shortened sleep-onset latency by about 7 minutes and increased total sleep time by about 8 minutes, with a modest improvement in sleep quality (Ferracioli-Oda 2013, PMID 23691095). Those are real but small effects, and they do not scale with the dose the way the shelf implies. A 2024 systematic review with dose-response meta-analysis of double-blind trials found the reduction in sleep latency and the gain in total sleep time peaked at about 4 mg a day, and that taking melatonin around 3 hours before the desired bedtime worked better than the 30-minutes-before schedule most labels print (Cruz-Sanabria 2024, PMID 38888087). The classic trial range, and the one this site’s dosage guide uses, is 0.5 to 3 mg; across all 808 melatonin labels of any form in our standard census, the median serving is 3 mg. Gummies sit above even that.

We read 100 melatonin gummy labels: the median is 5 mg

Original researchEvery melatonin gummy label we could enumerate in the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database on 2026-09-18: 198 labels whose filed physical form is a gummy or jelly and whose panel carries a melatonin row, of which 100 are sold as melatonin (98 multivitamin, magnesium, sleep-blend and CBD gummies with melatonin in them are excluded), from 51 brands; 1,804 melatonin labels of any form are on the market. Every label carried a parseable melatonin quantity.

The median directed serving delivers 5 mg of melatonin, from a median of 2 gummies at 2.5 mg each. A quarter of labels direct 2 mg a day or less and three quarters 5 mg or less; 64% of servings reach 5 mg, and servings on the shelf run from 1 mg to 20 mg. Not one label in the census directs less than 1 mg, so the 0.5 mg low end of the trial range, and the 0.3 mg physiological dose that restored sleep efficiency in adults over 50 in a dose-ranging trial (Zhdanova 2001, PMID 11600532), do not exist in gummy form.

Sugar and children. 89% of labels declare a sugars row and 8% claim sugar-free; the median gummy is a small sweet taken at bedtime, after brushing. 21% of labels set their Daily Value column for children four and older, and a children’s line share exists on the shelf that did not hold across halves, so we do not print it; the poison-control record below is the number that matters there.

How we read the labels, and what did not hold

Method: 198 labels retrieved from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database on 2026-09-18 by paging its ranked search for melatonin-gummy terms and keeping only labels whose filed physical state is “Gummy or Jelly” and whose panel carries a melatonin row; 100 sold as melatonin were analysed. Melatonin per serving is the Supplement Facts row for the panel’s serving; daily dose is that quantity multiplied by the label’s maximum daily servings; per gummy is the serving divided by the serving count. Every figure was recomputed in two halves of the corpus split by label-id parity: 15 of 18 checks agreed within tolerance and only those are printed. Not printed (3): share at least 10 mg per serving; median sugars g/day (declaring); kids-line share. The serving range is an observed extreme, not a validated statistic. The census and the cost table are published as open data at /melatonin/gummies.json (CC BY 4.0). What it cannot tell you: how much of each sells, whether the gummy contains what the label says (see the lab tests), or anything about brands that have not filed with the NIH.

What the lab tests found: the label is often wrong

Two published analyses have measured melatonin products against their labels, and both found the label unreliable. In 2023, researchers bought 25 products sold as melatonin gummies in the US and measured them by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography: only 3 contained a quantity within 10% of the declared amount, measured melatonin ran from 74% to 347% of label, and one product contained no melatonin at all, though it did contain CBD (Cohen 2023, PMID 37097362). Six years earlier, an analysis of 31 melatonin supplements found content from -83% to +478% of label, lot-to-lot variation within one product of up to 465%, more than 71% of products outside a 10% margin, and serotonin, a controlled neurotransmitter, in 8 of them (Erland 2017, PMID 27855744). A gummy labelled 5 mg may deliver 4 or 17. That is the strongest argument on this page for starting low: the label you are dosing from is an estimate, and a USP Verified mark, which checks content and dissolution, is the only label-level signal that someone measured it.

Cost per night: gummies against a tablet

Doses are the melatonin on each product’s NIH label; prices are the current Amazon price for the exact container. Cost per night is price divided by servings, because melatonin is dosed by the night, not by the milligram: a 10 mg gummy for the price of a 1 mg one is not better value, it is a bigger dose than the trials support. Ordered by dose.

When a gummy is the wrong tool

Buy a gummy if a chewable is the difference between taking a small dose consistently and not taking it, and buy the 1 mg one first. Melatonin’s job is to move the clock, which a small dose two to three hours before bed does; jet lag, a shift-work reset, and trouble falling asleep at a reasonable hour are the cases the trials cover.

Do not buy a gummy for a dose under 1 mg, because none exists; the 0.3 mg physiological dose the older-adult trials used comes only as a tablet. Do not buy a 10 mg gummy to sleep harder: above about 4 mg the dose-response curve is flat, and the lab tests say the number on the bottle is approximate anyway. Do not buy any melatonin gummy for a child without a clinician’s plan: from 2012 to 2021 US poison-control centers recorded 260,435 pediatric melatonin ingestions, a 530% increase, mostly unintentional in children five and under, with hospitalisations rising over the period (Lelak 2022, PMID 35653284). The fruit-flavoured gummy is the reason.

Safety, briefly

Melatonin has no established tolerable upper intake level and short-term use at the doses on this page is well tolerated in adults; the common complaints at higher doses are morning grogginess, headache and vivid dreams, all of which resolve by lowering the dose. It interacts with warfarin and other anticoagulants, with blood-pressure drugs, and with immunosuppressants and fluvoxamine; anyone on those, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, should ask before starting. Because a gummy’s actual content can be several times its label, a person who is sensitive should treat every new bottle as a new dose. Keep gummies where a child cannot reach them, and keep the bottle’s child-resistant cap on.

Frequently asked questions

How many mg of melatonin is in a gummy?

On the 100 melatonin gummy labels filed with the NIH, the median gummy carries 2.5 mg and the median directed serving is 5 mg from 2 gummies; servings run from 1 mg to 20 mg. That median is above the 0.5 to 3 mg range the sleep trials used. Read the Supplement Facts row and the serving size: a "5 mg" label is often two gummies, and one gummy is the smaller dose.

Are 5 mg or 10 mg melatonin gummies too much?

They are more than the evidence needs. A meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials found melatonin shortened time to fall asleep by about 7 minutes and lengthened sleep by about 8 minutes, and a 2024 dose-response analysis found the effect plateaus around 4 mg, taken about 3 hours before bed. Above that, a bigger dose adds nothing measurable in those data and raises the odds of next-day grogginess and vivid dreams reported at higher doses. Start at 0.5 to 1 mg and go up only if it does nothing.

Do melatonin gummies actually contain what the label says?

Often not. In a JAMA analysis of 25 melatonin gummies sold in the US, only 3 contained a quantity within 10% of the label; measured melatonin ranged from 74% to 347% of the declared amount, and one product contained no melatonin at all. An earlier analysis of 31 melatonin products found content from -83% to +478% of label, lot-to-lot variation up to 465%, and serotonin in 8 products. A USP Verified mark is the only label-level signal that the dose was checked.

Which melatonin gummy is best?

Nature's Truth Low Dose Melatonin 1 mg Gummies: 1 mg in one gummy, the only adult gummy we track that sits inside the trial range at a single gummy, at $0.16 a night. If you know you need more, Zarbee's Adult Sleep with Melatonin 3 mg Gummies delivers 3 mg in one gummy at $0.40 a night. If you want the physiological dose the older-adult trials used, Life Extension Melatonin 300 mcg is a 0.3 mg tablet at $0.07 a night; no gummy on the shelf goes that low.

Are melatonin gummies safe for kids?

Only with a clinician's plan. Melatonin is used in children with autism and ADHD-related sleep problems under medical supervision, but gummies look and taste like candy: US poison-control centers logged 260,435 pediatric melatonin ingestions from 2012 to 2021, a 530% rise, mostly unintentional and mostly in children five and under, with hospitalisations rising. 21% of the gummy labels we read set their Daily Value column for children four and older. Keep every bottle out of reach and out of sight.

When should I take a melatonin gummy?

Earlier than most labels say. The dose-response analysis found the largest effect when melatonin was taken about 3 hours before the desired bedtime, not 30 minutes; a small dose two to three hours before bed shifts the body clock, which is the mechanism, while a large dose at bedtime mostly sedates. Take it at the same time each evening, keep the lights low afterward, and stop if it is not helping after a week.
