Why ordinary dietary intake already clears the AI

Why the UL is set for neurotoxicity, not GI upset

Many mineral upper limits exist because high intake causes gastrointestinal discomfort — an unpleasant but low-stakes ceiling. Manganese is different: the 11mg adult UL exists specifically because of manganism, a Parkinsonism-like neurotoxic syndrome documented in the occupational-exposure literature (Racette 2017, Baker 2015). This is the single most clinically important safety carve-out in this cluster: anyone in this situation should not self-supplement manganese or use the general-population UL as a safety reference — dosing must be managed by their clinical team.
