How Long Does Magnesium Take to Work?
Informational summary of published clinical trial timelines — not medical advice. Talk to a clinician for personalised guidance, especially with kidney disease.
The clearest timeline comes from anxiety trials, not sleep ones. A 2017 RCT found a measurable anxiety-score improvement within 2 weeks, in a trial that ran 6 weeks in total.
For sleep, a meta-analysis reports a 17-minute drop in time-to-fall-asleep — but it doesn't say how long people supplemented before that was measured. Don't expect magnesium to work the first night.

Timeline by Goal
Only outcomes with a stated trial duration or reassessment window are listed below. If a goal isn't here — sleep, deficiency correction — it's because the published evidence doesn't specify a timeline. See the sections after the table.
| Goal | What the Evidence Shows | Source-Trial Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Anxiety / stress (Tarleton 2017) | GAD-7 anxiety score improved 4.5 points (P<0.001) on 248mg/day elemental magnesium (as magnesium chloride) | Effect observed within 2 weeks; trial ran 6 weeks total |
| Anxiety / stress, Mg + B6 (Noah 2021) | Significant improvement in anxiety and depression scores; combination showed superior stress reduction vs. magnesium alone | Notable gains in the first 4 weeks of an 8-week trial |

What to Take While You Wait
Best value Vitamin Shoppe Magnesium Glycinate 400mg $0.23/day
Two tablets deliver 400mg of elemental magnesium as glycinate. That's inside the 248-450mg/day range the anxiety trials studied, and it's the same well-absorbed form used in the sleep research. This is the dose and form the timeline above is based on — not a way to speed it up. Take it 30-60 minutes before bed if sleep is your goal.
Vitamin Shoppe Magnesium Glycinate 400mgWhy Sleep Isn't in the Table
The sleep evidence comes from a pooled analysis of 3 RCTs in 151 older adults (Mah & Pitre 2021, PMID 33865376). It found sleep-onset latency fell by 17.36 minutes (95% CI: -27.27 to -7.44, P=0.0006) versus placebo. That's a real, measured outcome.
But the underlying trials don't report how many nights or weeks of supplementation came before that measurement. See our best-for-sleep page and dosage guide for the full picture.
There's no published same-night onset claim to point to. If you're expecting magnesium glycinate to visibly shorten your time to fall asleep on night one, that's ahead of what the evidence actually measured.
The honest answer is "unknown," not "fast."
What Changes the Timeline
- Absorbed form. Magnesium oxide is only about ~4% absorbed, versus substantially higher absorption for glycinate and citrate (PMID 11794633, PMID 34111673). A poorly-absorbed form delivers less usable magnesium per dose. That's plausibly slower to build an effect — though no trial has directly timed onset by form.
- Dose within the studied range. The anxiety trials above used 248-450mg/day elemental magnesium. Our dosage guide lists 300-450mg/day as the clinical range for anxiety, and 320-500mg/day for sleep. Doses below that range haven't been shown to reproduce the same results.
- Adding B6. The Noah 2021 trial found magnesium plus 30mg/day vitamin B6 outperformed magnesium alone on stress reduction, over the same 8-week window. The combination didn't work faster — it worked better, by the same endpoint.
When to Reassess
Give magnesium at least 2 weeks before expecting a measurable anxiety effect. Don't call it a failure before the 6-8 week mark — that's the endpoint the underlying RCTs actually used.
For sleep, there's no comparable reassessment window. If you're not seeing a difference, that's consistent with the evidence not specifying a timeline, not with the supplement failing on a schedule nobody tested.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does magnesium work immediately?
No. There's no same-day or same-night data for magnesium. The best timeline we have is a 2017 RCT where a 4.5-point GAD-7 anxiety-score improvement showed up within 2 weeks of taking 248mg/day of elemental magnesium, in a trial that ran 6 weeks total (Tarleton et al., PMID 28654669). That's a 2-week detection point, not a growth curve. Treat same-day claims as anecdote, not evidence.
How long before I feel magnesium working for anxiety?
Give it at least 2 weeks. That's when a 2017 RCT (Tarleton, PMID 28654669) first detected a 4.5-point GAD-7 improvement (P<0.001) on 248mg/day elemental magnesium, in a trial that ran 6 weeks total. A 2021 RCT (Noah, PMID 33864354) comparing magnesium plus B6 to magnesium alone found most of the gain happened in the first 4 weeks of an 8-week trial. Don't call it a failure before the 6-8 week mark those trials used as their endpoint.
Does magnesium help you sleep the first night you take it?
Probably not the way people hope. The main sleep evidence — a meta-analysis of 3 RCTs in 151 older adults (Mah & Pitre 2021, PMID 33865376) — found a 17.36-minute reduction in time to fall asleep. But nobody reported how many nights or weeks of use came before that measurement. Take it 30-60 minutes before bed, and don't expect that 17-minute effect on night one.
Why does absorbed form affect how long magnesium takes to work?
Magnesium oxide is only about 4% absorbed, versus much higher absorption for glycinate and citrate (PMID 11794633, PMID 34111673). A poorly-absorbed form delivers less usable magnesium per dose. That's a plausible reason a slow-absorbing form takes longer to build an effect, though no trial has directly timed onset by form. It's a logical factor, not a separately tested one.
