Why the number is per 100 mg beta-glucan, and what the price actually buys

A lion’s mane label’s milligram number says nothing about how much mushroom is in the capsule: mycelium grown on grain can be mostly rice starch and still read 1,000 mg. Beta-glucan, the fungal cell-wall fibre a validated assay measures specifically (McCleary 2016, PMID 26957216), is the only number that lets you compare products, so every product here is priced per 100 mg of beta-glucan at its label-disclosed minimum. Products that disclose no beta-glucan (Host Defense in our set) cannot be priced this way and are left off the table rather than guessed.

Across the 3 products that disclose beta-glucan the spread is 3.8× per 100 mg, and it does not follow the daily price: the product with the highest daily price can be the cheapest per unit of active. Human evidence for lion’s mane is thin, with the best-known trial using 3 g a day of whole dried fruiting body for 16 weeks (Mori 2009, PMID 18844328), so buy the product that proves what is in it and keep expectations modest.

Why 100 mg of beta-glucan is the unit, and what the trials actually used

No human lion’s mane trial dosed by beta-glucan, so 100 mg is a comparison unit, not a target. The best-known trial gave 30 Japanese adults aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment 3 g a day of dried fruiting body (four 250 mg tablets three times daily) for 16 weeks; cognitive scores rose against placebo from week 8 and fell back within 4 weeks of stopping (Mori 2009, PMID 18844328). A 49-week pilot in mild Alzheimer’s disease used three 350 mg capsules a day of erinacine A-enriched mycelia and reported better MMSE and daily-living scores than placebo (Li 2020, PMID 32581767). A 4-week study in 30 women reported lower depression-scale scores after eating lion’s mane cookies (Nagano 2010, PMID 20834180). These are small studies using whole powder or a specific mycelial extract, neither standardised to beta-glucan. To reach the Mori dose with a 1:1 fruiting-body powder declared at 30% beta-glucan, 3 g of powder carries about 900 mg of beta-glucan, nine of the 100 mg units on this table; multiply the per-unit price by nine for that daily cost.

Reading the quality column

The quality column is the same four-rung ladder as the third-party-tested page, compressed to a phrase. Rung 1 means the exact product appears in an independent certification registry in our snapshots; rung 2 means the brand publishes a lot-specific certificate of analysis you can match to the number on your container; rung 3 means a representative or undated report; rung 4 means a claim on the label or website with nothing behind it that we could open, or a brand site that blocked our check.
