Glycine vs Magnesium Glycinate vs Collagen (2026): The Overlap

By Erin Rose · Updated · Methodology

Informational comparison — not medical advice. Glycine is well tolerated, but if you take clozapine, ask your prescriber first (glycine may reduce its effect). Amounts below are approximate and, importantly, are not disclosed on those products' labels.

The verdict

These three get confused because they all deliver glycine. Plain glycine is the cheapest, most verifiable way to get the studied 3 g dose. But if you already take magnesium glycinate (~1.2–1.3 g glycine per dose) or collagen (~2–3 g per scoop), you're getting a real amount already — possibly enough that a separate glycine supplement is redundant.

Magnesium glycinate: glycine you're already taking

"Magnesium glycinate" is really magnesium bisglycinate — one magnesium ion bound to two glycine molecules. Because glycine is the bulky part, the chelate is about 86% glycine by weight. To deliver 200 mg of elemental magnesium you need roughly 1.4–1.5 g of the compound, which carries about 1.2–1.3 g of glycine along for the ride. That's a meaningful fraction of a 3 g sleep dose — so some of magnesium glycinate's calming reputation may actually be glycine.

The catches: many "magnesium glycinate" products are blends cut with cheap magnesium oxide to hit an elemental-magnesium number for less money, which lowers the true glycine content unpredictably; and no label discloses the glycine milligrams, so you can't verify or price it. If magnesium is your main goal, see best magnesium and forms compared.

Collagen: about a third glycine

Collagen is unusually glycine-rich — glycine makes up roughly every third amino acid, so ~20–33% by weight. A standard 10 g scoop yields about 2–3 g of glycine, genuinely comparable to a dedicated dose, and glycine's role as a building block for collagen is one honest reason collagen supplements may do something (de Paz-Lugo 2018).

The catches: collagen costs far more per gram than glycine powder — you're paying a premium to get glycine bundled with other amino acids; the glycine amount isn't on the label; and the glycine sleep and glutathione research used isolated glycine, not whole collagen, so "collagen helps me sleep like glycine" is an unproven extrapolation. More on that in collagen.

So do you need a separate glycine supplement? If you take magnesium glycinate or a daily collagen scoop, probably not — you're already getting 1–3 g. Buy dedicated glycine when you specifically want the verifiable, cheap 3 g sleep dose, or when you don't take those other products.

Frequently asked questions

Is magnesium glycinate the same as glycine?

No, but it's ~86% glycine by weight of the chelate — a 200 mg elemental-magnesium dose carries ~1.2–1.3 g glycine. Catch: many products are blended with cheap oxide, and the glycine amount isn't disclosed, so you can't verify or price it.

Does collagen contain glycine?

Yes — roughly a third by weight, so a 10 g scoop gives ~2–3 g glycine. But it's expensive per gram, the glycine isn't listed, and the research used isolated glycine, not collagen.

Do I need a separate glycine supplement?

Maybe not — if you already take magnesium glycinate or daily collagen, you're getting 1–3 g of glycine. Buy dedicated glycine for the verifiable, cheap 3 g sleep dose or if you don't take those.
