The honest answer

Exactly two PubMed-indexed trials, both Cognizin-funded, in two different non-general-healthy-adult populations. McGlade 2019 (n=75) found improved attention and psychomotor speed in adolescent males at 250–500mg/day for 28 days. Nakazaki 2021 (n=100) found a secondary episodic-memory improvement in older adults with age-associated memory impairment at 500mg/day for 12 weeks. Both are funded by or co-authored with Kyowa Hakko employees — disclose this every time either is cited. A third, widely-marketed "healthy young women" study has no PMID and isn't MEDLINE-indexed.

The two trials, read carefully

This is the entire indexed evidence base for "citicoline helps attention or memory" in a population that isn't already a stroke or dementia patient — and it deserves a careful reading precisely because retail marketing for this ingredient routinely presents it as more established than it is.

Both trials share the same funding pattern. McGlade 2019's co-authors Miho Kizaki and Eri Nakazaki are Kyowa Hakko Bio Co. employees, and co-author Toshikazu Kamiya is a Kyowa Hakko U.S.A. employee. Nakazaki 2021 was funded by Kyowa Hakko Bio, and authors Eri Nakazaki and Fumiko Watanabe are Kyowa Hakko Bio employees while Danielle Citrolo is a Kyowa Hakko USA employee. Kyowa Hakko is the maker of Cognizin. This does not make the trials invalid — but it means the entire indexed "citicoline helps attention/memory" evidence base for non-disease populations comes from the ingredient's own manufacturer, and that should be disclosed every single time either trial is cited.

The study that doesn't have a PMID

You may have encountered a claim that citicoline improves attention in "healthy adult women," often attributed to "McGlade et al. 2012." This study is widely referenced in industry and marketing summaries, reportedly published in Food and Nutrition Sciences. It does not appear in PubMed under any author, title, or keyword search tried — including a direct search of McGlade's full indexed publication list — because Food and Nutrition Sciences (Scientific Research Publishing) is not a MEDLINE-indexed journal. If you see this study cited with a PMID anywhere, that PMID is fabricated or misattributed. Treat it as an unindexed, non-peer-reviewed-tier claim if mentioned at all — it should never be given the same evidentiary weight as McGlade 2019 or Nakazaki 2021, both of which are real, indexed, peer-reviewed trials.

The Cochrane counterweight on attention specifically

The 2005 Cochrane systematic review (Fioravanti & Yanagi) pooled 14 trials of CDP-choline in elderly patients with chronic cerebral disorders and found "some evidence" of a positive effect on memory and behavior in the short-to-medium term, with stronger evidence on global clinical impression — but it found no evidence of a beneficial effect on attention specifically, and flagged significant heterogeneity in dosing and design across the pooled trials. This is a 2005 review in an elderly, disease-adjacent population, so it doesn't directly contradict McGlade 2019's attention finding in healthy adolescent males — different populations. But it's honest context: even the highest-rigor systematic review available treats "citicoline helps attention" as unestablished in the population it reviewed, at a time when the McGlade/Nakazaki trials hadn't yet been published or weren't part of that review.

If you want to try citicoline for this specific reason with realistic expectations, the trial-matched dose is 250–500mg/day (see the dosage guide) — not the much higher stroke-trial dose, and not a guarantee based on two small, industry-funded, short-duration trials in narrower populations than "healthy adult." None of this evidence substitutes for sleep, exercise, or other interventions with stronger evidence for attention and memory.
