This isn't really a versus — they do different jobs. Creatine fuels short, maximal efforts (strength, power, sprints under ~10 s) and is the most evidence-backed sports supplement there is. Beta-alanine buffers acid during sustained hard efforts (~1–4 min), a smaller and more specific effect. If you pick one, creatine is the broader, higher-value choice for almost everyone; beta-alanine is a targeted add-on — and they stack well.

Why they don't compete

They power different energy systems. Creatine tops up the phosphocreatine system, your fastest way to regenerate ATP for a heavy lift or a short sprint. Beta-alanine raises carnosine, which mops up the hydrogen ions (acidity) that accumulate when you're working hard for a minute or more (Trexler 2015). One helps you produce force now; the other helps you keep producing it as fatigue sets in. That's why they're a classic stack — and why a blended pre-workout that underdoses both is a worse deal than buying each correctly.

Which should you take?

  • Just one, general fitness or strength: creatine — broader benefits, unmatched evidence, cheap.
  • Your training is high-intensity intervals / repeated sprints / sets to failure (1–4 min): add beta-alanine, 4–6 g/day for 4+ weeks.
  • Both: creatine ~3–5 g/day + beta-alanine 4–6 g/day — complementary, no known interaction. Dose them separately, not via a blend.
  • Pure strength / muscle size: creatine; beta-alanine won't add strength or 1RM.
