Berberine for Weight Loss (2026): How to Take ‘Nature’s Ozempic’

Berberine is a plant compound people call “nature’s Ozempic.” In trials, people who took it lost about 2 to 4.6 more pounds and trimmed their waist. They took 1,000 to 1,500 mg a day with meals for about 12 weeks. Our pick, NutriFlair Berberine + Ceylon Cinnamon, gets you there with 2 capsules a day for about $14 a month.

Why we pick it Two capsules give 1,200 mg of berberine, inside the 1,000 to 1,500 mg a day that trials used, and it costs the least per mg of the 8 bottles we compared. To match the trials, take one with breakfast and one with dinner.

If you want a lab-checked bottle Toniiq is on NSF’s testing list for about $6 more a month.

Why berberine is called “nature’s Ozempic”

In lab and animal studies, berberine raised GLP-1, the gut hormone that Ozempic copies. GLP-1 helps your body handle sugar and tells your brain you are full. It is a supplement, not a drug, and its results are smaller (side by side). In people, trials found it lowered blood sugar and insulin and took a few pounds off when people took enough of it for long enough. Here is how.

How much berberine for weight loss

Take 1,000 to 1,500 mg of berberine a day, split across your meals, for about 12 weeks. That is what most weight trials used, and a review that compared doses found about 1,000 mg a day worked best. 6 of the 8 bottles we compared say to take it with food.

When to take berberine for weight loss: a 12-week plan

An easy way to take our pick the way trials did. It starts with one capsule, because an upset stomach is the most common side effect.

A 12-week plan with NutriFlair Berberine + Ceylon Cinnamon (600 mg capsules)
Week 11 capsule with dinner. Give your stomach a week to get used to it.
Weeks 2 to 121 capsule with breakfast and 1 with dinner: 1,200 mg a day.
Every dayTake it with food. If your stomach is upset, take it with your biggest meal.
Week 12Check your weight and waist against day 1. Most trials measured results here.

One bottle holds 120 capsules, 60 days at 2 a day. For 12 weeks, get 2 bottles.

Best berberine for weight loss

The best berberine is one that gets you to the trial amount. Many bottles don’t. About 1 in 3 berberine bottles tell you to take less than the trials used: 52 of 170 labels named for berberine in NIH’s label database.

The front of the bottle can mislead, too. On this one, “500 MG” is two ingredients added together.

Amazing Formulas Quercetin Berberine bottle: the front says 500 MG; the Supplement Facts panel lists Quercetin 250 mg and Berberine HCl 250 mg per capsule; suggested use is one capsule daily.
The front says 500 mg. The berberine is 250 mg a day. The other 250 mg is quercetin, and the label says 1 capsule a day: a quarter of the lowest trial amount. Amazing Formulas Quercetin Berberine, NIH label 256143.

Check any bottle in 10 seconds: find “Berberine” on the Supplement Facts panel, multiply its mg by the capsules the label says to take each day, and check that it reaches 1,000 mg or more. Our pick gets there in 2 capsules. If you want a bottle on a public testing list, this is the one:

Berberine vs Ozempic

One is a supplement you can buy today; the other is a prescription drug. Ozempic and Wegovy are the same drug, semaglutide. Wegovy is the weight-loss brand.

Berberine patches, blends and other claims to skip

What some sellers and guides say, and what we found. For “500 mg” fronts and blends, see how to check a bottle.
They sayWhat we found
“Berberine patches work”No study has tested berberine patches in people. A 2026 pharmacy journal paper found 24 “natural GLP-1” patches for sale and said they break supplement rules. The trials used capsules.
“Lose 4 to 5 kg in 12 weeks”One supplement guide says this, with no study named. Trials found less: the real numbers.

Who should skip berberine, or ask a doctor first

The most common side effect is an upset stomach. Taking it with meals and starting with one capsule, as in the plan, makes that less likely.

Questions people ask

Dihydroberberine vs berberine HCl: which is better?

The weight trials used berberine HCl, so that is what we pick. Dihydroberberine is a newer form taken at 100 to 300 mg a day. No trial has tested it for weight yet, though one small study found 100 mg reached higher blood levels than 500 mg of berberine.

Berberine vs metformin: what is the difference?

Metformin is a prescription drug for type 2 diabetes. Berberine is a supplement. Both lower blood sugar, and taken together they lower it more than either alone. So don’t swap one for the other or mix them on your own: ask your doctor.

Does berberine help with belly fat?

Trials found a trimmer waist (results). In a 60-day trial in overweight adults with high blood sugar, berberine also cut visceral fat, the deep belly fat, more than a placebo pill.

Should I take berberine in the morning or at night?

No trial compared the two. Trials split the daily amount across meals, so the easy plan is one dose with breakfast and one with dinner.

How we checked this

We read 431 berberine labels in NIH’s Dietary Supplement Label Database. The “1 in 3” counts labels whose product name starts with “Berberine” (not counting dihydroberberine): 170 say how much to take, and 52 direct less than 1,000 mg a day. We searched NSF/ANSI 173, NSF Certified for Sport, USP Verified, Informed Choice and Informed Sport for every bottle on October 15, 2026. Prices are each brand’s own list price for the bottle we link, checked October 15, 2026. Sunergetic has no store of its own that we could find, so we have no list price. Dihydroberberine is dosed in its own mg, so we don’t score it against berberine.

The weight results come from trials in adults with extra weight, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver or PCOS, mostly in China. We found no trial of berberine alone in healthy adults who only want to lose weight. Thorne’s 500 mg capsule is 225 mg of berberine HCl plus 275 mg of berberine phytosome; its label does not say how much of the phytosome is berberine.
