The honest answer

Three small trials, a real but modest and inconsistent signal — not elite-athlete evidence. Bellar 2015 (n=13) found lower-body strength up after 6 days at 600mg/day; upper-body strength did not reach significance. Marcus 2017 (n=48) found the LOWER 250mg dose beat the higher 500mg dose on jump power — not a dose-dependent result. Kerksick 2024 (n=20) found 630mg significantly improved one of four cognitive tests (Stroop) with NO effect on growth hormone or physical performance. All three trials studied college-age or recreationally-trained men over days, not weeks.

Three trials, read carefully

This is the pocket of alpha-GPC evidence most directly relevant to healthy adults training or competing recreationally — and it deserves a careful reading precisely because it's the evidence retail marketing leans on hardest. Read individually, none of the three trials here is a clean, unambiguous "it works" result.

What "works" actually means here

Read precisely, the strongest honest version of this claim is: in three small, short trials of college-age or recreationally-trained men, single or short-course alpha-GPC doses of 250–630mg produced a modest, inconsistent signal on isolated strength, power, or cognitive measures — never a clean sweep across every outcome tested in any one trial. Bellar's result held for lower-body but not upper-body strength. Marcus's result was non-dose-dependent, meaning the trial that's often cited as "alpha-GPC boosts power" actually undercuts the assumption that a bigger dose helps more. And Kerksick's one significant finding (Stroop score at 630mg) sat alongside three null cognitive tests and a null physical-performance and growth-hormone result in the very same trial. None of this adds up to "alpha-GPC doesn't do anything" — but it doesn't add up to a reliable, dose-scalable performance or focus enhancer either.

The growth-hormone claim, specifically

The most commonly repeated marketing claim for alpha-GPC in the exercise category is that it spikes growth hormone during resistance training. That claim traces mainly to Ziegenfuss 2008, a conference abstract presented at an ISSN meeting that has never appeared in a peer-reviewed, PubMed-indexed journal despite direct searches under multiple author/title combinations — it should be treated as unindexed industry-conference material, not peer-reviewed literature. The best available indexed evidence on the actual question is Kerksick 2024, and it found NO significant growth-hormone difference between 630mg alpha-GPC and placebo. Even setting the indexing question aside: no trial in this evidence base, including ones that do report a GH change, has shown that a GH spike translates into any downstream strength, body-composition, or performance benefit. Treat "GH spike" as a measured-but-unproven-relevance mechanism claim, not a benefit claim.
