Is Sea Moss Safe? Iodine, Thyroid, and Heavy Metals (2026)

Sea moss's real risk isn't that it "doesn't work" — it's iodine. Sea moss is a red algae that absorbs iodine (and heavy metals) from seawater at highly variable, almost-never-labeled levels. Because both too little and too much iodine disrupt the thyroid, an unpredictable dose is a genuine problem — excess iodine from seaweed has triggered both overactive and underactive thyroid states in real patients. On top of that, algae concentrate arsenic, cadmium, and lead. None of this means sea moss is poison; it means "natural superfood" is the wrong mental model, and some people should not take it at all.

The iodine problem: a dose you can't know
Iodine is essential — your thyroid needs it to make hormones — but the safe range is narrow, and both deficiency and excess cause thyroid dysfunction and goiter (Leung & Braverman 2014, PMID 24342882). The adult tolerable upper limit is 1,100 micrograms/day (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements). "More iodine is better" is simply false — the risk is U-shaped.
Now the catch: you can't know how much iodine is in a sea moss product. Iodine in seaweed products spans an enormous range — from ~16 µg/g in some red seaweeds to thousands in processed brown kelp, a 500-fold spread across products (Teas 2004, PMID 15588380) — and even the same red species varies by harvest region, season, and wild-vs-farmed sourcing (Darias-Rosales 2020, PMID 32803579; Roleda 2018, PMID 29548461). Even wild vs. farmed changes the number (Roleda 2018, PMID 29548461). And commercial sea moss almost never puts iodine on the label (Bouga 2015, PMID 28231201).
The good news: red seaweeds like sea moss are far lower in iodine than brown kelp/kombu. The bad news: "lower and unpredictable" still means you can't dose it, and product labeling rarely helps (Smyth 2021, PMID 33981614).
This isn't theoretical — it's documented
Excess iodine from seaweed supplements has caused real, hospital-documented thyroid problems — in both directions:
- Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Kelp-containing tea and kelp tablets have triggered iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis (Müssig 2006, PMID 16808731; Gherbon 2019, PMID 31517826). Published case reports describe the same "Jod-Basedow" reaction specifically after Irish sea moss and sea moss gel — those are conference reports rather than indexed studies, but the mechanism is identical: a high iodine load in a susceptible person.
- Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Overconsumption of seaweed has driven TSH sky-high via the Wolff-Chaikoff effect (Unosawa 2024, PMID 38558700).
- Newborns. Maternal excess intake of kombu (a brown-algae kelp, far higher in iodine than red sea moss) has caused neonatal hypothyroidism (Crawford 2010, PMID 20919974) — which is why the NIH LactMed database advises avoiding sea moss while breastfeeding unless it's verified low in iodine.
Keeping it honest: these are cases of heavy or susceptible use, and they mostly involve higher-iodine brown seaweeds. In a large Japanese cohort (~100,000 mother-infant pairs), the dominant risk factors for infant hypothyroidism were maternal thyroid disease (Graves', Hashimoto's) and iodine-disinfectant exposure — not everyday maternal diet (Yokomichi 2022, PMID 34433732). And the risk-assessment study of Irish moss itself concluded that a normal ~4 g/day serving poses no iodine risk — you'd have to eat roughly 286 g/day to exceed the upper limit from that batch (Darias-Rosales 2020, PMID 32803579). So the takeaway isn't "seaweed is dangerous" — it's that the dose is unpredictable and unlabeled, so the at-risk groups above should steer clear and everyone else should keep it modest and tested.
Heavy metals: what algae soak up
Sea moss grows by absorbing minerals from seawater — and it doesn't discriminate between good ones and toxic ones. Algae bioaccumulate arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. A European dietary-exposure assessment flagged heavy metals (alongside iodine) from seaweed consumption as a genuine safety consideration worth weighing, not a non-issue (Dujardin/EFSA 2023, PMID 36742462). How much any given sea moss carries depends entirely on where it grew — which is why a certificate of analysis matters.

The arsenic nuance nobody explains: most seaweed arsenic is the organic form (arsenosugars), which is far less toxic than inorganic arsenic. So a cheap "total arsenic" number can look alarming and still be fine — or look fine and hide the toxic fraction. A trustworthy test reports inorganic arsenic separately (the worst inorganic-arsenic problems are actually in brown hijiki, not red sea moss — Yokoi 2012, PMID 22561181).
How to buy a safer sea moss
Because you can't judge iodine or heavy metals by looking, the only real signal is testing. Look for a product that publishes:
- A batch certificate of analysis (COA) from a third-party lab
- Iodine per serving as an actual number
- Heavy metals with inorganic arsenic reported separately
- Species identification (Chondrus crispus vs cheaper substitutes)
- A "16-in-1" blend that hides the sea-moss amount
- No iodine number anywhere on the label or COA
- "Lab tested" as a badge with no viewable report
- Claims of "92 minerals" or thyroid "healing" (marketing, see the evidence guide)

What about carrageenan?
Sea moss naturally contains carrageenan, and you'll see scary claims about it. Here's the balanced read: the gut-inflammation research uses degraded/purified carrageenan at high doses, not whole sea moss, and regulators (EFSA) re-evaluated food-grade carrageenan and found "no concern for carcinogenicity," while lowering its acceptable intake to a temporary level pending better data (EFSA 2018, PMID 32625873). Whole sea moss hasn't been tested for this in humans. It's neither the proven danger nor the non-issue the two sides claim — another reason to be moderate.
