Why we pick it The only ingredient is whey, with no sweetener, so it stirs into oatmeal, yogurt or coffee. One scoop gives 25 g of protein for 120 calories. It is on Informed Choice.

What you give up It has no flavor. It is a whey concentrate, so it has a little lactose. If milk bothers you, see ISO100 below.

Questions people ask

How much protein does a 70-year-old need?

The PROT-AGE study group advises people over 65 to get at least about 1.0 to 1.2 g of protein per kg of body weight a day, and 1.2 g or more if they are active. For a 150 lb (68 kg) person that is about 68 to 82 g a day. Most older adults with an acute or long-term illness need even more, 1.2 to 1.5 g per kg (PROT-AGE); ask your doctor.

How much protein should I eat at one meal?

In a study of healthy older men, the body’s muscle-building response to a meal leveled off at about 0.4 g of protein per kg (Moore 2015). For a 150 lb man that is about 27 g in one meal. One scoop of Naked Whey gives 25 g.

Who should not take protein powder?

People with severe kidney disease (eGFR, a kidney blood test, under 30) who are not on dialysis may need to limit protein (PROT-AGE). If you have kidney disease, ask your doctor before adding protein.

Is protein powder enough to keep muscle?

No. PROT-AGE also advises endurance and resistance (strength) exercise at a level that is safe for you. Protein helps most when you also use your muscles.
