Complete protein?
NoIt has no tryptophan

Why we pick it It dissolves when you stir it in with a spoon, even in hot coffee. It adds no flavor, is the cheapest per gram of protein here, and is our top collagen pick (see all collagens).

What you give up A serving has 11 g, under half of a whey scoop. And collagen lacks one amino acid your body needs, so it does not count fully toward muscle like whey does. For that, see the whey picks below.

The best protein powder for your coffee

Collagen is the easy choice for hot coffee. If a complete protein matters more to you, use one of these wheys. Each one is unflavored and on a testing program.

Want a complete protein: Naked Whey

Whey is a complete protein, so it counts fully toward muscle. It needs one step in hot coffee: let the coffee cool a few minutes, or stir the whey into a little cold milk first (why). Naked Whey is unflavored whey and nothing else, has 25 g of protein a scoop, and is on Informed Choice. It is the pick on our best protein powder page.

Less lactose, still a complete protein: BulkSupplements Whey Isolate

An isolate is filtered further than regular whey, so it has less lactose: typically 0.5 to 1%, against 4 to 8% for an 80% protein concentrate like Naked Whey (U.S. Dairy Export Council). We found no test showing isolate mixes into hot coffee any better, so use the same cool-first step. BulkSupplements Whey Protein Isolate is unflavored with nothing added, has 25 g of protein a serving, and is on NSF Certified for Sport. It costs about 15% less than Naked Whey per 25 g.

How to add protein powder to coffee

Hot coffee

Collagen: stir it straight in. Whey: let the coffee cool to drinking warmth first, or stir the whey into two or three spoonfuls of cold milk to make a paste, then pour in the coffee slowly.

Iced coffee

Both work. Shake the whey or collagen with the cold coffee and milk in a jar or shaker bottle, or use a frother. No paste needed.

Start with less

A full scoop thickens a small cup. Try half a scoop first and work up.

Questions people ask

Can you put protein powder in hot coffee?

Yes. Collagen stirs right in, because hydrolyzed collagen dissolves easily in water (León-López 2019). Whey clumps in very hot coffee: in a lab study, whey isolate started to set at about 158°F (70°C), and coffee is brewed near 200°F. A food-safety review recommends serving coffee at 130 to 160°F, well below brewing heat (Abraham 2019). So let it cool until it is warm, not steaming, or mix the whey with a little cold milk first. A frother helps.

Is collagen a complete protein?

No. It has no tryptophan, one of the amino acids your body cannot make, so it counts as an incomplete protein. One study worked out that collagen can still make up about a third of a day's protein without leaving you short on any of them (Paul 2019, a calculation for a typical U.S. diet; two of its authors work for collagen businesses, Gelita and the Collagen Research Institute). If you want coffee protein to count fully toward muscle, use whey.

How we picked

We looked for unflavored protein powders sold on Amazon, so nothing fights your coffee's flavor, and kept those on a testing program for the tub sold. We ranked on three things, in this order: how it mixes into hot coffee, a testing program for the tub you buy, and the cost of 25 g of protein. We also looked for a test showing whey isolate mixes into coffee better than regular whey and found none. Want a flavored shake instead? See the best protein powder, the best whey isolate, or the protein guide.
