Why it fits after 65 Older adults tend to eat less magnesium, absorb less of it and lose more in urine (NIH). The target does not rise with age, so a pill only needs to fill the gap between your food and 420 mg (men) or 320 mg (women). 200 mg does that and stays under the 350 mg limit, with room for food. It is glycinate, a form many people choose because it is gentle on the stomach. Take it at least 2 hours apart from osteoporosis drugs (bisphosphonates such as alendronate); some antibiotics need more space (NIH).

What you give up On the Informed Sport list: every batch is tested for drugs banned in sport. It is not a check of the label. Nature’s Truth Magnesium Glycinate is the same dose with a label check, for a little more a day.

Which magnesium fits you?

Revive MD suits most people over 65. If one of these is you, start there.

Kidney disease, a heartburn pill or a water pill? Ask your doctor first.

If you have kidney disease, ask your doctor before you take magnesium. Weak kidneys cannot clear the extra, so it can build up (NIH). Heartburn pills (PPIs) taken for a year or more can lower magnesium, and supplements do not always raise it, so ask your doctor to check your level first. Water pills change how much you lose, and osteoporosis drugs and some antibiotics need hours of space from magnesium (NIH).

Want a label check?

Nature’s Truth Magnesium Glycinate gives the same 200 mg in 2 capsules and is on NSF/ANSI 173, which checks that the capsule holds what the label says.

Prefer citrate?

Nature Made Magnesium Citrate gives 250 mg in 2 softgels and is on USP Verified. Small studies found citrate absorbed better than oxide (NIH). It can loosen stools, so skip it if yours are already loose.

How to choose magnesium after 65

Keep the dose modest

The upper limit for adults is 350 mg a day of magnesium from supplements and medicines. Food does not count toward it (NIH). Count every product you take, including multivitamins and calcium-magnesium combos.

Pick a form that sits well

Too much magnesium from pills most often causes diarrhea. Start low, and take less or split the dose if your stools loosen.

Know what the testing list checks

USP Verified and NSF/ANSI 173 check the label. Informed Sport tests every batch for drugs banned in sport, which is not a label check.

Questions people ask

How much magnesium should a senior take?

The same as any adult: 420 mg a day for men and 320 mg for women, from food and pills together. The number does not rise with age (NIH). The full dosage guide for seniors.

Is 400 mg of magnesium too much for a senior?

From pills, it is above NIH’s upper limit, which mostly means a higher chance of diarrhea. Food does not count toward that limit. If you have kidney disease, extra magnesium can build up, so ask your doctor before taking any (NIH).

Does magnesium help older adults sleep?

A little, maybe, and the evidence is low quality. In 3 trials of 151 older adults with insomnia, people on magnesium fell asleep about 17 minutes faster than on placebo; total sleep time did not change significantly (Mah 2021).

Will magnesium stop leg cramps at night?

Probably not. A Cochrane review found magnesium unlikely to help typical cramps in older adults (Garrison 2020). Talk to your doctor about cramps.

How we picked

We looked for a form and dose that suit older adults: a modest amount of magnesium, under the pill limit, in a form that is gentle on the stomach. Of those, we chose the one with a public testing record at a fair cost, and we show the rest by cost per 200 mg. The full numbers are in the magnesium guide for seniors. For every pick, see the best magnesium overall or the magnesium guide.
