Lion's Mane: Fruiting Body vs Mycelium (What Beta-Glucan Tells You)

The three things a label is really telling you
Lion's mane products differ on three axes that marketing deliberately blurs together. Keeping them separate is the whole game.
1. Fruiting body vs mycelium — the honest version
The fruiting body is the actual white, shaggy mushroom. Mycelium is the thread-like network that grows first. They are not interchangeable, but the popular "fruiting body good, mycelium bad" framing is wrong in both directions:
- Hericenones — compounds linked to nerve growth factor (a protein involved in brain-cell growth and repair) — are found mainly in the fruiting body (Wang 2025, PMID 39723452).
- Erinacines — a different nerve-growth-factor-linked class, and possibly better at reaching the brain — are found only in the mycelium. A 2025 analysis found the erinacine-making genes far more active in mycelium and detected none of four erinacines in fruiting-body tissue at all (Doar 2025, PMID 40181478; see also Liu 2024, PMID 38890878).
So a purpose-grown, filler-free mycelium extract is a legitimate category — it's the only source of erinacines. The problem is not mycelium; it's mycelium grown on grain and sold with the grain still in it.
2. What "mycelium on grain" actually is
Grain (rice, oats, or rye) is sterilized, seeded with lion's-mane mycelium, and left to colonize. Then — instead of harvesting a mushroom — the entire block, mycelium plus the undigested grain, is dried and ground into powder. Grain is mostly starch, so a large fraction of that "mushroom" powder is starch by weight. It's cheaper and faster than growing real fruiting bodies, which is why it dominates the low end of the shelf.
3. Beta-glucan vs "polysaccharides" — the number that exposes it
This is the crux. The bioactive fibers in medicinal mushrooms are beta-glucans (Mirończuk-Chodakowska 2021, PMID 34836215). Grain starch is alpha-glucan. They're chemically different — but a cheap "total polysaccharide" assay lumps them together, so a product that is mostly rice starch can truthfully print "40% polysaccharides" while containing almost no active beta-glucan. A validated laboratory method separates the two honestly (McCleary & Draga 2016, PMID 26957216).
The one-line rule: a real extract discloses a beta-glucan percentage. "Polysaccharides," "10:1 concentrate," or "500 mg mushroom" with no beta-glucan number tells you nothing about how much mushroom you're getting.

The conflicts of interest — on both sides
Because this topic is a marketing battlefield, it's worth being upfront about who's funding which claim:
- The fruiting-body side. The widely-quoted "mycelium is mostly starch" percentages trace largely to industry figures who sell fruiting-body extract — a real financial interest. Their underlying chemistry is corroborated by independent methods (McCleary), but treat the specific percentages as industry-reported, not independently audited.
- The mycelium side. The strongest erinacine/Alzheimer's human data (Li 2020, PMID 32581767) was funded by the mycelium-extract manufacturer, and a related earlier paper was retracted for undisclosed conflicts. Encouraging, but not disinterested.
The tell that cuts through it: in 2026, even the loudest anti-mycelium voice launched a grain-free mycelium product. The objection was never "mycelium" — it was grain dilution and no verification. Which is exactly what the beta-glucan number measures.
So what should you actually buy?
Buy a product that (1) states fruiting body, (2) discloses a beta-glucan percentage, and (3) shows a batch COA — and pay for verified actives, not a big "500 mg mushroom" number that could be mostly rice.
