Best Joint Supplement for Dogs (2026): Cost per Day by Weight

Fish oil has the best evidence for dog joints. To give a 30 lb dog the dose used in a trial (940 mg of EPA and DHA a day), Grizzly Salmon Plus costs $0.24 a day. Glucosamine sells the most, but a 2022 review of the trials found it did not ease joint pain in dogs.

Which joint supplement has the best evidence for dogs?

Fish oil. Two reviews of the dog trials, from 2012 and 2022, found the strongest support for omega-3 fats (EPA and DHA) (Vandeweerd 2012; Barbeau-Grégoire 2022). In one trial, 74 dogs with arthritis given about 69 mg of EPA and DHA per kg a day had less pain and limping after 12 weeks than dogs given a placebo (Mehler 2016).

If your dog limps or is stiff, see your vet first. A supplement does not treat the cause, and your vet can prescribe pain relief.

Cost to give the trial dose (69 mg of EPA and DHA per kg a day): 310 mg for a 10 lb dog, 940 mg for a 30 lb dog, 1,880 mg for a 60 lb dog.

How much fish oil does a dog need for joints?

The trial dose works out to about 940 mg of EPA and DHA a day for a 30 lb dog. The Merck Veterinary Manual gives 50 to 100 mg of EPA per kg a day. Labels differ. At each label's own dose, a 30 lb dog gets 1,354 mg from Grizzly Salmon Plus, 1,440 mg from Welactin Omega-3 liquid, 473 mg from Zesty Paws Salmon Oil, 405 mg from Nordic Naturals Omega-3 for Dogs. So the Zesty Paws Salmon Oil and Nordic Naturals Omega-3 for Dogs labels give about half the trial dose.

Ask your vet before going above the label, and always if your dog takes a pain reliever or is having surgery. Very high doses can affect blood clotting and upset the stomach (WSAVA).

Questions

Does glucosamine work for dogs?

The best evidence says no. A 2022 review of the trials found glucosamine and chondroitin did not ease joint pain in dogs, and its authors said these products should no longer be recommended for pain (Barbeau-Grégoire 2022).

Is Cosequin or Dasuquin better?

Both are glucosamine and chondroitin from Nutramax. Dasuquin adds ASU (avocado and soybean extract) and costs more: $0.59 a day for a 30 lb dog against $0.13 for Cosequin, at the label's maintenance dose.
