"methodology": "Betaine HCl (betaine hydrochloride) is a single molecule sold in fairly narrow dose ranges (500-790mg per capsule, most bundled with pepsin), so unlike categories with multiple evidence tiers, the six tracked products are ranked on one honest axis: costPerCapsule = price / servingsPerContainer, at the 1-capsule label serving. Whether a product includes pepsin (a protein-digesting enzyme, commonly co-marketed) or gentian root extract (a traditional bitters ingredient) is recorded as a real formulation difference, not a separate evidence tier — no citation in this evidence base tested any of these six specific branded products. Betaine HCl is NOT betaine/TMG (trimethylglycine); see betaine-tmg-cost-by-brand for that separate cluster. The strongest evidence for betaine HCl itself is narrow and clinical (Yago et al., gastric reacidification and drug-absorption rescue in volunteers with drug-induced hypochlorhydria) — there are no RCTs found testing betaine HCl against placebo for bloating, reflux, or indigestion in a general population. This statement has not been evaluated by the FDA; these products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Betaine HCl is an acid and should not be combined with a history of peptic ulcer, gastritis, or GERD, or with NSAIDs, corticosteroids, PPIs, or H2 blockers.",
